Felton Street Early Learning Preschool
Description
This not-for-profit children’s service has provided 30 years of quality care and early years education to children and families of Gateshead. Established in 1977, with funding from the Federal Government to build the premises, this not-for-profit children’s service has provided quality care and early years education to the children and families of Gateshead and the surrounding communities for over 30 years.
Formerly known as Daniel’s Den Preschool, in 2001 the service underwent a name change to become Felton Street Early Learning Preschool. With this new name the preschool broadened the educational programmes on offer, to be inclusive of children between two and six years old.
Today, Felton Street Early Learning Preschool continues to provide quality early years education to children and families from all over Lake Macquarie and Newcastle.
Felton Street Early Learning Preschool is a not for profit children’s service. Owned and operated by the community, the preschool’s voluntary management committee is elected yearly and is made up of parents and other interested community-minded persons.
The preschool enrols 39 children per day, and children are grouped by age as either 2-3 year olds (the Butterfly Room) or 3-5 year olds (the Busy Bee Room).
The preschool operates on extended hours from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and is open Monday to Friday during normal school terms. Licensed to operate by the NSW Department of Education and Communities, the preschool complies with Education and Care Services National Legislation 2010 and the Education and Care Services National Regualtions 2011 and all other legislative and regulatory instruments.
With a reputation for being inclusive of all children, the preschool works in partnership with families to ensure the best outcomes for all children enrolled. Our programming encompasses the Early Years Learning Framework and is an emergent curriculum.
Believing strongly in the importance of early years education, the preschool employs qualified and experienced Early Childhood educators to work with the children enrolled. As well as supporting the on-going training of future professionals for employment in the wider community.
Felton Street Early Learning Preschool strive to be a voice in the community about children’s growth, development and education. Our organisation has strong links with other community organisations and groups including the NSW Department of Education and Communities, the NSW Department of Families and Community Services, Catholic Education, church groups, Brighter Futures, Hunter New England Area Health Services, Aspect, Firstchance and other specialist health professionals and organisations.

At the end of 2015 the Busy Bee children decided to plant and try to grow potatoes after reading the book "The Potato People" by Pamela Allen. This has been a success, with several potatoes growing over the holiday break. Our new Busy Bee friends for 2016 helped harvest and wash the potatoes this Friday (5th February) and are now working at deciding what we will make with our potatoes. What do you think we should cook?
