Manuka Honey Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the native manuka bush. It is used to treat wound infections, burns, ulcers, sore throats and other conditions. Hydrogen peroxide is a key component giving the honey an antibiotic quality. Manuka honey has a number of compounds with medicinal effect including the antibacterial component methylglyoxal (MG). MG is in most types of honey, but usually only in small amounts. The higher the concentration of MG, the stronger the antibiotic effect. There are 2 scales honey producers have developed for rating the potency of manuka honey. These scales are UMF, (Unique Manuka Factor) and MGO (Methylglyoxal). UMF rating Not all honey labeled as manuka contains significant levels of antibacterial factors. To be considered potent enough to be therapeutic, manuka honey needs a minimum rating of 10 UMF. Honey at or above that level is marketed as "UMF Manuka Honey" or "Active Manuka Honey." The Active Manuka Honey Association (AMHA) tests the antibacterial performance of a honey comparing it to phenol, a disinfectant. They state: "The presence of the special non-peroxide activity can be detected only by an array of scientific testing directly relating to the phenol standard. The rating has a one-to-one relationship to the phenol standard. " This means that a UMF rating of 20+ is equivalent in strength to a 20% solution of phenol. Manuka Honey is independently tested in an accredited laboratory for its antibacterial UMF®. The ideal UMF rating varies depending on your purpose, but laboratory studies have shown that manuka honey with a level of UMF®12 to UMF®15 is effective against a wide range of very resistant bacteria. MGO rating MGO ratings refer to the level of Methyglyoxal in the honey. Methyglyoxal is a marker of Manuka honey but it does not cause the non-peroxide activity. MGO is a trademark of Manuka Health New Zealand Ltd, and you will only see MGO labels on their own products. Manuka Health state that the higher the MGO rating in Manuka honey the higher the level of anti-bacterial activity in the honey. Methylglyoxal is a compound found in the pollen of the New Zealand native Manuka tree's flowers. This tree, has a short flowering period so the placement of hives and the timing of the harvest is crucial to ensuring higher quality manuka honey. Studies have suggested that unlike antibiotics that may lead to resistant bacteria after repeated exposure, manuka has not been reported to cause the development of resistant bacteria or so-called "superbugs".
