Righteo Peeps! I finally got the scope base made for the 338 improved. The base is an adjustable 2x piece arrangment that allows for more angle or taper for the scope. The front rest is a Seb Max, a burris 8-40x50 xtr scope and a bench made by Gerry and Josh Harp from treated pine and stainless fasteners. The normal looking rifle in the photos is a sako 591 varmint in 243 to give some proportion.

Another job for today was mounting a scope on an old lithgow model 1b single shot 22. The rifle didn't have a dovetailed receiver....so we rectified this by machining some 60 degree grooves into the barrel of the rifle.

This week we have been modifying a toyota v8 diesel to fit up to a nissan auto gearbox. This involved working out the relationship between the bolt holes and dowel pins to the flange on the end of the crankshaft. Using these measurements we then made a jig fixture to mount the bell housing onto. We then had to plot out the mounting holes for the bell housing to attach to the gearbox.........it was a lot of work but once machined everything bolted up nicely! The holes were drilled at 10,000 rpm and 350mm per minute feedrate and the boring and facing cuts were 10,000 rpm and 850mm per minute feedrate.

Couple of jobs we did today.....fit a new pac nor barrel to a M70 winchester and a stainless muzzle brake to a tikka t3 varmint rifle. When cutting threads we use full form tungsten tools as opposed to hand ground high speed steel. Using full form tooling makes for stronger, more uniform threads. Full form tooling cuts the correct radius at the crest and root of the thread. One photo shows the program we use for the threading cycle.

This is a Steyr M12 pistol made in 1917. This particular pistol is Austrian issue, as shown with the WN17 marking on the right hand side trigger guard. The M12 design uses a rotating barrel to lock itself to the slide. The rifling is a fast twist that is an opposite direction to the locking cam, so as to delay the unlocking process. The cartridge it uses is a 9x23mm steyr that is loaded to lower pressure than a luger. The other eccentricity of this design is clip loading......the pistol doesn't have a removable magazine. This actual pistol was bought back from the first world war by a member of the Australian 8th Light Horse. Enjoy!
