Dog-Owners Caution: Today when walking a client's dog at sunrise, I saw a man who was acting strangely near Anthony Beale Reserve in St Helena (On the far side of the footy oval which is not fully fenced). I kept an eye on him because I thought he might be intoxicated as he was circling a little and bent down near a tree base several times. I wanted to make certain he did not require an ambulance. He appeared to wrap something around the bottom of the tree and seemed to regain himself. Thinking he was alright, I headed off. On my way back I went to check out the thing he had tied around the tree and found a small bag of chicken tied there. It might be nothing, but I suspect dog-baiting. I have reported the incident to the police but threw the bag out as the dog I was walking was extremely keen to try and get at it. Photos below. Please be careful if you let your dog off-lead around here and keep an eye on them if they are showing too much interest in something! If you suspect they may have eaten something that might have been baited, get them to the vet asap.

It was up with the sun today for Joey's walk, making certain to beat the heat!
Baxter's first walk with a pram
When I started work with Baxter he pulled at the lead every time he was on it. Today we introduced the pram so he can soon go walking with his two human siblings. He's come such a long way in such a short time - really a clever little man! It was quite difficult to film while holding the lead and driving a pram as I'm sure you can see.

Make sure your pets are safely tucked inside tonight. There is a severe thunderstorm warning issued for Melbourne and it is due to hit Greensborough by 6.50pm. If you have a dog who is frightened of storms, make certain they are secure and sheltered and can get away from the noise. There is no need to hover or coddle them - they will feel more anxious if you behave as though there is something to be afraid of. Keep in mind you will most likely see your dog behaving strangely quite a while before the storm hits or even if the storm does not reach your area - as well as having superior hearing and smell, dogs are far more in tune with barometric pressure than humans.

Summer is heating up! Make sure your dog has shade and plenty of nice fresh, cold water each day. They will go through it a lot faster than they do in winter. One of Ollie’s favourite moments of the day is when his paddling pool gets filled with cold water, just ready for him to lay down and cool off. Shell pools generally sell for around $10 and are a terrific way to ensure your dog has plenty of water and gives them somewhere fun to play as well.

Do you have a dog you just can’t tire out? Perhaps you have a working breed, designed for stamina, who can easily outlast the most determined owner? Or maybe your pooch is struggling to lose some weight? Try a backpack! Maggie is a Kelpie X who can happily swim, run and chase for hours on end. Here I have her saddled up with her backpack, giving her a task to do – something working dogs love – as well as weighing her down enough to make even a regular walk more exertive. She is carrying two bottles of water, a folded up bowl and some snacks. By the time we returned home she was falling asleep with her head up the car window. Where You Lead loves to get creative when we’re exercising our dogs. There’s so much more to entertaining them than the same old walk each day. Mixing in on-lead and off-lead runs, swimming, games, nosework and obedience ensures one pooped pooch at the end of the day.

Say hello to Baxter. Baxter is our newest addition to the Where You Lead family. While he's wonderful with children Baxter needs a little help learning his Ps and Qs - especially around food! Today we started practicing some impulse control around treats. As well as obedience training, Baxter has joined us as a regular walker and enjoyed his first jaunt today where we encountered the lovely patch of flowers in the photo. He had a great time sniffing all through it.

Ollie had a little downtime for photos at the Diamond Valley library today. As of next week we will be there every Wednesday 3.45-4.45. Ollie is a literacy dog. Did you know that children feel much more comfortable when reading aloud to a dog than to a person? It helps them build their confidence in a non-judgemental environment. If you know someone with a child who might like to read to Ollie, please come down. You can read more about this wonderful idea here: http://thebark.com/content/reading-dogs-help-children-learn

Joey and I took advantage of the lovely weather to visit Westerfolds Park today. We found ourselves being observed from the grass by a tiger snake. Don't forget to stick to the paths and short grass at this time of year, and always keep an eye on your dog when they are off-lead, especially around water. It's a good idea to contact your local vet to make sure they stock antivenom so you know where to go immediately in an emergency. If your dog is bitten, keep them calm and quiet and transport to the vet as soon as possible.
