Awabakal Environmental Education Centre, is a NSW Department of Education school which provides excursion and fieldwork opportunities for school students. Awabakal Environmental Education Centre, is a NSW Department of Education school which provides environmental and sustainability education for students and teachers in Newcastle and the Hunter Region. Located at Dudley, the adjacent Awabakal Nature Reserve provides excellent field work opportunities to compare habitats and assess human impacts. This coastal area was historically used by the Awabakal Aboriginal people on a seasonal basis.
All programs at Awabakal Environmental Education Centre reflect the NSW curriculum outcomes and the Department Environmental Education Policy for Schools requirements. Excursions are conducted at a range of locations including Awabakal Nature Reserve, Glenrock State Conservation Area, Merewether Beach and Redhead Beach. Staff are Department of Education teachers with specialisation in environmental education.

Cardiff High School Year 11 Biology students had an amazing day exploring the different environments, collecting biotic and abiotic data within the Awabakal Nature Reserve with AEEC teachers. Some reliving primary school memories of an excursion where they built gunyahs and used ochre.

It was a fantastic day at the Environmental Education Student and Teacher Network Day held by Awabakal EEC and Wetlands Environmental Education Centre. The student presentations were a highlight. Congratulations to the students who presented. Students and Teachers participated in a water or biodiversity audit. Teachers looked at implementing fieldwork activities in their school and the ClimateCam program. Students completed a workshop on improving the sustainability of their school.

Amazing excursion with Lambton High School and Whitebridge High School Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science students today. The schools combined together to share the transport, enjoy the beach and rock formations, explore for fossils, conduct abiotic testing and some very important networking. What a great bunch of students!
