Multicultural Day at Pittwater High 17 Nov 2016 A group of 10 students attended a very thought provoking multicultural day at Pittwater High. The event was run by The Schools Promise which seeks to involve schools around Australia with the work of Mahboba’s Promise. This organization supports widows and orphans in Afghanistan through education and vocational training. It has opened a school for girls and three Hope Houses for orphaned children. When we think of Afghanistan we often think of deserts, mountains, war and soldiers. It’s a country on the other side of the world that a lot of students on the Northern Beaches don’t any personal connections with. The challenge of the day was to break down some of those stereotypes we have made and start to focus on words like “hope” and “enduring people” to describe Afghanistan. We were entertained by Afghan dancers and musicians beautifully adorned in cultural dress. We got to enjoy Afghan food and get henna tattoos. There was a challenging talk about global empathy – just because there is an issue on the other side of the world with which we have no personal connection – does not mean that we shouldn’t care. Empathy does not have bounds and we should not confine empathy to our local context. We have all come away feeling inspired to have a multicultural day at Cromer Campus next year.
