This is the new solid mahogany twin neck for Roy Payne , the upper neck is for lap slide and is a shorter scale , lower neck is regular guitar . It has a magnetic slide holder so he can switch back and forth between guitar and slide .Keep an eye out for his Hillbilly Bop Safari show , and CD .

The owner couldn't gig with his beloved strat , I trimmed a new piece of maple to match the angle of the crack through the headstock , I knew it would slide around when glueing , so I cut it oversize then trimmed it down after . Carefully sanded then layered tinted lacquer over it in various orange and browns , pretty happy with the result . So is Larry .

Why is it more costly for a refret on a maple neck ? These frets were very low and not functioning well , but how to get them out ? The special flush-ground pullers couldn't grip them being so low , so I had to drive them out sideways . Fender actually installed frets this way back in the day . Then they lacquered OVER the frets , which leaves a thick web of lacquer along the fret edges . The lacquer doesn't stick so well and wants to fall off the neck , so it all gets delicate . I heat the frets before removal with a soldering iron . You'll see the lacquer standing up where the frets were , I then sand this down to a level surface to accept the new frets , and polish a bit . Then install the frets , level them off , recrown the tops , sand and polish them . This guitar also had a brass nut (string spacer) which seemed to be a problem as well , but worked ok with the new frets and so stayed put .

Acoustic bridge re-glue .

Im removing the lacquer under the bridge , something the factory should have done . No wonder the bridge came off , the bridge won't stick to lacquer for long , it needs wood to wood bond .

Hey people , there is a cool show on tonight . The genre is Sacred Steel which is blues/gospel played with a feature of lap steel guitar ! I don't think we have seen this before in Newcastle and I've heard this show has been dynamite at other venues , three Afro American sisters playing and 3way harmonies , also with Dom Turner of Backsliders , and Ben Edwards on bass , Big Daddy Roy will open the show too . Get on down to this awesome international blues/gospel show folks , you won't be sorry !

This '58 tele came back in , the neck pickup was shorting out and the owner found a 3 saddle bridge . The pickup needed a full strip and rewind , as you can see its a lot of turns of very fine wire , 8000 turns in fact , followed by a wax dip to stop microphonics . The bridge needed a little relic work and came up good , a loose fret was sorted out and she is back in business.

It has long been accepted that a Gibson guitar had to loose the binding nibs each end of the frets , if it had a refret , And thats ok , most would say its more serviceable that way , but the guitar looses some mojo and vintage appeal when the fret nibs go. You can see before the job below , worn frets , then after with 6 new frets and nibs intact , its not impossible , accurate and time consuming yes but Im happy with it and so is the owner .
