Welcome to ‘Fun with Flowers Friday’! Today we are talking about Tulips (Tulipa Cultivars). Here are a couple of fun facts; Tulips originated in the Middle East and spread out over Europe in the early 16th Century. Back in the 1600’s, a bulb of a tulip plant was worth a horse and carriage and the cost could go as high as a property! Nowadays, they are most popular around Holland and are grown locally in Australia too. There are over 6000 cultivars of Tulips worldwide and they range in all kinds of colours and also different shapes. Some of the different types are your traditional goblet shape which is rounded in shape and usually single petals, parrot type which are pointier almost like a lily type shape when they open and fringed type which usually come in double petals and have a feathery fringing on the petals. Tulips are given as potted gifts or in a bunch. They like cooler temperatures as the heat opens them up very quickly and the flowers if placed in the light will bend toward it so it’s best to have light above them not to the side as they will bend and open which will reduce their lifespan. Flower lifespan, once in a bunch, is 5-7 days if they are closed, however, if they are open they may only last 3-4 days, so it’s best to buy them closed. Why are they great for wedding Bouquets? Tulips come in a vast range of colours from white to pink to orange even purple! They are great if you want to add a pop of colour between other bigger bud flowers such as roses and lilies. They are also effective if you want a long stem arm sheaf/spray as they have beautiful stems that sit perfectly and flow well on the arm.
