Those in the Building industry leave their families each day and work tirelessly in all weather conditions and under extreme physical and mental pressure. There are real risks that come by working on a building site. Accidents happen every day to tradies by no fault of their own.

Nothing concerns me more than when I am sitting down with a husband and a father who is the sole or main bread winner of the family, also is a self-employed tradie, and he has either no or limited risk insurance protection. I immediately think of what that family with a $400,000 mortgage and 3 hungry mouths to feed would do if something were to happen to dad.

I also become extremely concerned when I am meeting with that same person who has $20,000 sitting in an old superannuation fund and hasn’t contributed into super since they were doing their apprenticeship 20 years ago. It’s always, I’ve been meaning to start contributing.

My fears are…
What would they and their family do if they were temporarily or permanently disabled?
What will they do at age 65, and they can no longer physically work and they have not prepared adequately for retirement?

The above is an all too common story that I find with many families I meet with. I am concerned for our trade workers. I appreciate what they do for their families and what they do for our communities and what they do for our economy.
