Rare arts and crafts dwarf bookcase by the notable Barnstaple maker Shapland and Petter with pewter and other inlays and very much in the Scottish style of Baillie-Scott with the typical geometric chevron inlay to the edges and square cut outs to the sides and exposed dovetails to the top. Condition wise this piece has had 3 holes drilled into its back panel so it could be hung from the wall which presumably led to its owner sawing off its legs. Thus it is 71cm high by 51cm wide and 18cm deep but very rare to find one of these in Oz. It is for sale for only $495 at our Shop 121 at Commercial Road Antiques. #shaplandandpetter #artsandcraftsfurniture #brisbaneantiques #brisbanevintage

Mahogany planter set with four tiles designed by Christopher Dresser for Minton in the aesthetic and Japanese style in about 1875. Associated with the design reform movement in the second half of the nineteenth century, Dresser is considered the first industrial designer. Influenced by the architect and designer Augustus Pugin and the ornamentalist Owen Jones, he was also inspired by botanical forms and the arts of Japan as these tiles demonstrate. Dresser designed items often turn up in Australia and are highly desirable. Bought this plant stand fresh out of a container in a local antique shop in 1981. Those were the days!! #christopherdresser #aestheticmovement #mintontiles #victorianceramics #brisbaneantiques #brisbanevintage #paddingtonantiquecentre #augustuspugin

Hall Thorpe (1874 - 1947), the expatriate Australian who lived most of his life in England, determined his woodcuts would be "wholesome in subject, cheerful in colour and decorative in design". His masterpiece, "The Country Bunch" c.1922, was the largest print of his career. Reputed to have taken him a year to make and using 15 blocks to separate its colours, this coloured woodcut is 76 x 63 cm. Posted for your enjoyment. #hallthorpe #woodcut #ausralianart #queenslandartgallery #paddingtonantiquecentre #thisisbrisbane

Douglas Annand watercolour of the Power House at Bowen signed and dated 1943 from our large collection of mainly early Queensland artists which we will be selling off on our Insta site in 2017. This painting is illustrated at p29 of the Sydney Ure Smith publication of 1944 "Douglas Annand : Drawings and Paintings in Australia" . We purchased this years ago as the artist's treatment of the sky reminded us of the work of his Darling Downs contemporary and friend, Kenneth Macqueen, and his mackerel sky paintings. Dare we say that this watercolour is superior to many of those exhibited in the recent Annand exhibition which toured the Toowoomba, Cairns then Tweed Heads Regionsl Galleries. We have another watercolour by Annand which was exhibited at the Johnstone Gallery in July 1952, "Fiesta San Giorgio, Portofino, Genoa, May 6, 1951 which we shall also be selling. #douglasannand #johnstonegallery #kennethmacqueen #queenslandartgallery #museumofbrisbane #qutartmuseum #uqartmuseum #australianwatercolour #queenslandartists #brisbaneantiques #brisbanevintage
