The lilies in our garden never look like they'll open in time for Christmas. But then, like magic, they burst open all at once, and drench the summer evening air with their intoxicating perfume. I find myself drawn outdoors again and again to walk through them with the dogs and soak it all in while their beauty lasts. I just love them! #christmaslilies #remindmeofmychildhood #mrsgardnersgarden #gardenideas #lilium #summerintheantipodeangarden #antipodeansummer

Christmas lilies always remind me of childhood Christmases at home on the farm in NZ. Mum always had a massive vase of them in the lounge. Their perfume combined with that of the pine Christmas tree meant festivities were in the air. #familytradition #christmaslilies #nowidothesame

Cont'd from previous post ... This week an air of anticipation as we prepare to open our new garden emporium, The Green House, in Moss Vale in the Southern Highlands. Though excited to open the doors, I'm sad that the preparation stage is almost over. After a year of cleaning away decades of grime and mould, tearing up damp carpets, replacing broken windows, and nourishing the depleted gardens, the past few months have been about bringing beauty back to the house. Working on the leanest of shoestring budgets we have scrimped and saved to gather together enough pieces to fit the house out as a garden emporium, bookshop, and gift shop. Favorite pieces and treasures from home have been cobbled together with op shop finds to dress the house. And as we gently coaxed her into order and dignity, friends arrived one after the other with gifts in hand. Orchids and tulips for the hallways, bulbs and rare plants for the gardens, books for the shelves, beautiful curtains and pictures for the walls, statues for the garden and soup and home baked bread to sustain us through long days spent lifting and shifting, hanging and painting, polishing and arranging every nook and cranny of the house. All these beautiful gifts have added joy to the process of refurbishment and now our little green house, filled with all this love, is like a bird with her chest puffed out, ready for a Spring opening. And we can't wait to share her with you. The Green House will officially open on September 1, daily from 10am to 5pm, 7 days a week. #thegreenhousemossvale #thepottingshedbowral

Cont'd from previous post ..... And sitting there polishing the crystals, I remembered the thrill as I watched another Diva being prepared for the stage ... the incomparable Dame Kiri te Kanawa in her black diamond studded gown, calmly poised as the dresser added beautiful, crystal earrings before she stepped onto the stage. They dangled down each side of her majestic face. Like chandeliers. The finishing touch. And onto the stage she swept. This week it is our turn to stand in the wings waiting for the music to begin and for our Diva to take to the stage. We can't wait. The Green House will open September 1. The first day of Spring. The story of The Green House in Moss Vale is about to begin and there will be plenty of drama and excitement. Of that I am sure. #thegreenhousemossvale #gardenemporium #thenextchapterbegins #somanystoriesinagarden

Last week Mr Pinkerton came to hang two beautiful crystal chandeliers at our new shop, The Green House, which will officially open in Moss Vale on September 1. We have gone without lots of things to afford the fitout of the house, and these lovely chandeliers, which were far outside our limited budget, were the last on a long list. While the wiring was prepared, I sat on the floor carefully polishing each of the crystals and as I knelt there, an overwhelming sense of excitement came over me. After months and months of struggle, of bureaucracy and gaining approvals, of repairing and restoring, fossicking and finding, lugging and lifting, here we finally were putting the finishing touches to the crumbling old house we had found exactly a year ago. When we first saw the old Station Master's House we knew she would be perfect to house our new garden emporium, but the road hasn't been easy. And as beams of late winter sunshine streamed through the windows lighting up every room, I looked around at all the treasures we had gathered to bring this dilapidated old house back to life, and felt a deeply pleasing sense of anticipation. It took me back to my days as a young publicist watching in the dressing room as performers were prepared for the stage. Memories of the excitement and thrill of opening night at the ballet flooded back. Over many years I had the good fortune to work with some of the greatest dance companies in the world and the Bolshoi was my favourite. Clouds of dancers in spangled tutus, hair pulled into tight chignon perfection, the whiff of Gitanes cigarettes; the portly Russian shoe mistresses bustling about with perfectly stitched silken shoes dripping from their arms; the strains of the orchestra tuning up. The grandeur as the Prima Ballerina glides by and everyone steps aside. The attention to detail with every beaded bodice tightly laced and satin ribboned shoes firmly tied. The warm up. The beauty. The tension as the Corps waits for the curtain to rise as if for the first time and that moment as the orchestra begins and the first dancer lifts to the music. And the poetry of it all takes you to another world. ...To be continued.

Ever since visiting the famous White Garden, created by Vita Sackville West at Sissinghurst Castle, years ago, I have a better understanding of why so many gardeners want to emulate that style. But because I love to experiment so much with colour, my white beds always end up being interplanted with soft mauves, striking blacks, clear yellows or Royal purples ... or all of the above! I just can't help myself. Except in one bed where the white foxgloves self seed each year and flower simultaneously with a huge clump of white iris. Further up the bed colour takes over, but on a moonlit night in early summer, the white corner in my garden is magical, glowing softly in the velvety night air. Lots of white foxgloves now in store if you would like to get this look for spring. #foxgloves #springideas #digitalis #thepottingshedbowral #perennials #heirloomfavourites #getthelook #weadorefoxgloves

Two years ago a gorgeous young couple strolled arm in arm into my shop - she like a young Rita Hayworth, he like a dashing Brando. Stars in their eyes and madly in love they wandered happily through The Potting Shed commenting on this and that. Though new to gardening they had a real passion for it and wanted to learn. He was about to escape Sydney to follow his dream and plant a vineyard. She was staying in town to finish her studies. It was an instant mutual love affair and I look forward to their visits as our long chats take us into a colourful and fascinating range of subjects. During one such chat they admired the giant foxgloves planted in one of our displays and why, asked she, are they called Foxgloves. They don't look like gloves ... or foxes! We googled and found an unsatisfactory answer that talked of their botanical name "Digitalis" relating to the finger sized flower … but no mention of foxes! So off they set to research it. We will report back they called, her magnificent coppery hair gleaming as it swept over his shoulder. Some months later in they walked. Arm in arm. Grinning. 'The Foxglove' she beamed, her lovely eyes sparkling and triumphant, was a dance in early England, and the instrument used for the accompanying music was the shape of the flower on the Digitalis, and so it became called the Foxglove. At last. An answer. But why was the dance called The Foxglove?? We laughed and agreed more searching was required. Well today, thinking about our chat, I found this: http://www.middlemiss.org/lit/authors/denniscj/unpublished/foxglove.html … (link in my blog) and so the mystery continues! No mystery about the latest delivery though. We received an outstanding batch of white and lavender foxgloves at our Bowral store yesterday. They are fat and bouncing out of their pots, so come in for a visit if you would like to get this look for Spring! #nowisthetimetoplant #foxgloves #digitalis #somanystoriesinagarden #lovemyjob #getthelook #foxglovesnowinstore #weloveloversinourgarden #thepottingshedbowral #plantingideas #whattoplantwhen
