This month Bendigo Day Surgery hosted international nursing students from the University of Ulster. As 3rd year students Erin and Danielle have been busy honing their nursing skills under the guidance of all staff at BDS alongside Dr Jo Harding, the academic liaison for the university. BDS staff are equally enjoying the opportunity to develop their own teaching skills. The relationship between the university and BDS is now 3 years old and gaining strength each year. We look forward to welcoming our next students in 2017.

Although 'Day Case Tonsillectomy' has been shown by several studies to be completely safe (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17067079), they are not performed widely due to a lack of support services including local surgeon availability in the event of a problem arising (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25702346). The advantages of living in the same town as your surgeon, is that any problems can be immediately addressed without much fuss. Mr Jason Rockey (ENT surgeon) together with Dr Brad Hindson (anaesthetist) continue to 'bring surgery to the patients' by providing safe, day case tonsillectomy to residents of Bendigo! It is much better to recover in the comfort of your own home knowing that your surgeon is just a few kilometers away in case anything happens! Mr Jason Rockey consults at Suite 5, Bendigo Day Surgery and can be contacted on 0468 894 805 or (03) 5443 3561!

People should not take health advice from Pete Evans | Australian Medical Association (NSW)

This is sage advice. With many people in Central Victoria living and working on the land we see a high incidence of skin cancers. Both our plastic surgeons Mr Richard Dickinson and Mr Broughton Snell regularly perform surgery for skin cancers, as do some of our general surgeons.

Bowel cancer is a leading cause of death in Australia despite widely available and effective screening tests. The benefits of bowel screening are that early detection of polyps ('pre-cancer') can prevent cancer from developing, whilst early diagnosis of cancer improves survival. Are you 50 years of age or over and not yet had any bowel screening? Please discuss with your local doctor and consider 'Open Access Endoscopy' at Bendigo Day Surgery. http://www.bendigodaysurgery.com.au/index.php/our-services/open-access-endoscopy
