facebook.com********WORKING BEE SUNDAY JUNE 4th******** Just thought I'd put this up-front to grab your attention. Most of the grinding work that goes into keeping the Club in good shape and moving ahead inevitably is done by a small band of volunteers. How about picking up just a little of this load by helping out for just a couple of hours on Sunday morning, June 4th, starting at 9.00am. There will be tasks to suit all skills, strengths and fitness levels. Help is needed to repair the outside practice butts, spraying for weeds, cutting back grass, fixing club equipment and generally tidying up. Work will also be carried out in the indoor hall, workshop and the Club House. Members are asked to bring whipper snippers, weed sprayers, gloves, safety glasses, and to wear enclosed shoes and sun-safe clothing. The working bee will last until lunchtime. Lunch will be provided at the end. There will be a 'sign-up' list on the shoot blackboard this Saturday. We need to know numbers for catering purposes. Donna Miles Memorial Shoot - May 27th Donna was our Club Secretary for many years and a dedicated traditional archer. Sadly, Donna passed away last year after a short illness, so we are celebrating her contribution to the Club with a special 'trad' oriented shoot. Club longbows will be available to non-trad archers and afternoon tea will be served. More details next week. Saturday Activities Morning Temporary members are welcome to start arriving from 9.30am for the indoor supervised practice shoot starting at 10.00am. Please sign in first at the canteen and present your temporary membership card. And remember that you will need cash for the range and equipment hire fees (turn over the white card), as we don't have a credit card facility. Full Club members wanting to participate in the outdoor Club coaching Roo shoot are asked to be there by 9.45am so the shoot can start on time at 10.00am. For the benefit of any current temporary members, the Roo Shoot is the next coaching step after joining the Club. Once you become a member we will try to shoo you outside on Saturday mornings to the 'real world' where you will experience more demanding distances, and weather. New members joining the Roo shoot for the first time are asked to present themselves to the Director of Shooting (DOS). Assistance with setting up beforehand is appreciated. Lunch Lunch is from about 11.30am to 12.00noon. Afternoon Shoot Saturday Club Shoot - Full Club Members The afternoon shoot starts promptly at 12.30pm and you need to have your name on the shoot board by 12.00noon, or you don't get to shoot the scored shoot. If you are a full Club member and you want to record an official score, you need to enter the event via Archer's Diary in advance. You can do this from home, or on the computer in the Clubhouse, but it's easier to do it from home beforehand. Full Club members who have yet to learn how to score by attending the Roo Shoot can do the shoot but will not be able to record an official score. If you are still using Club equipment please do not attempt the longer distances. Stick to the Geelong and Newcastle. We would like to see more members, especially the young fit ones, pitching in more to help with setting up the shoot, rather than standing around watching other people do the work. Also, at the end of the shoot, we need people to check the bins, and if they're in need of emptying, take them across to the Club house. Adelaide - 30 arrows at each of two distances (60m, 50m) on a 122cm target and two distances (40m, 30m) on an 80cm target Short Adelaide - 30 arrows at each of two distances (50, 40cm) on a 122cm target and two distances (30, 20m) on an 80cm target Long Sydney - 30 arrows at each of four distances (90m, 70, 60, 50m) on a 122cm target Sydney - 30 arrows at each of four distances (70, 60, 50, 40m) on a 122cm target Long Brisbane - 30 arrows at each of two distances (90, 70m) on a 122cm target, and two distances (60, 50m) on an 80cm target - total of 120 arrows Brisbane - 30 arrows at each of two distances (70, 60m) on a 122cm target, and two distances (50, 40m) on an 80cm target - total of 120 arrows Geelong - 90 arrows at 30m on a 122cm target Newcastle – (the novice shoot for beginners) 90 arrows at 20m on a 122cm target face Regards

The smart thing to do is register on Archer's Diary from home. New full members are welcome to attempt the novice shoot (that's the Newcastle) on an informal basis. Before you can record an official score, two things need to happen - 1 your membership application needs to be processed onto the Archery Australia membership database so that your name shows up on Archer's Diary, and 2 you must learn how to score by doing the Roo Shoot on Saturday morning a couple of times. Here are the scheduled shoots - WA 60/900 - 30 arrows at each of three distances (60, 50, 40m) on a 122cm target - 90 arrows total Short Canberra - 30 arrows at each of three distances (50, 40, 30m) on a 122cm target - 90 arrows total Junior Canberra - 30 arrows at each of three distances (40, 30, 20m) on a 122cm target - 90 arrows total Geelong - 90 arrows at 30m on a 122cm target Newcastle (the novice shoot) - 90 arrows at 20m on a nice generous 122cm target.

Dear MPB Parents and Temporary Members Don't Get Caught Out - Club Shoot Starts at 10.00am This Saturday This is a message for full members of the Club. The Club Shoot will start at the new time of 10.00am on Saturday - see later for more detail. No Roo Shoot There will be no Roo Shoot owing to the 10.00am start for the Club shoot. Full members who do not want to do the Club shoot may practice privately indoor or outside further down the range. If you position yourself close to the Club shoot you will need to synchronise with the whistle signals. Lunch Owing to the 10.00am start for the shoot outdoor, lunch for members doing the Club shoot will be at 'half-time', otherwise, eat at your leisure. Club Shoot - Club Target Championship It's a big shoot this week, but the 20m Newcastle and Geelong shoots (both 90 arrows) will go ahead as well for newer full members who don't have sight settings for the distances required by the Championship. The Club holds its various championship shoots throughout the year. Each style of shoot (target, indoor, field and clout) is shot twice a year and you only need to do each style once to be in contention. This week-end is the first time around for outdoor target for this year. Everyone (other than for those doing the novice shoot) will shoot 36 arrows at each of four different distances according to their age group, gender and bow type. As a consequence it can get pretty confusing as to what you need to shoot for your score to count towards the Championship. The table below should help you sort this out. There's a legend underneath it to help you interpret the bow type categories. If you still can't figure it out, see us on Saturday. You also need to know your age category. If you aren't sure of this here is a link to the information on the Archery Australia website - http://www.archery.org.au/Membership/Age-Divisions Don't be scared off because it's the Championship. You don't need to be up to a particular standard to participate, however it wouldn't be sensible to attempt this shoot if you haven't already established sight settings for each of the distances, otherwise you will probably lose arrows. Also, Club equipment won't be able to reach most of the longer distances. To have your score count you will need to be a full Club member and shoot in your correct division. If you want to have a go at the shorter distances that's fine, but the score won't count for championship purposes. Don't forget that you need to have your name on the blackboard by 9.30am, and if you're a full Club member, be entered on Archer's Diary, and it will help get the shoot started on time if lots of willing hands help with setting out the targets. As it will be a long afternoon it is sensible to be prepared with water, hat, sunscreen and two biros.

What's happening this Saturday @ MPB Australian Open Tournament The Australian Open Tournament is being held this week-end at our sister club, Samford Valley Target Archers. Good luck to MPB members who are competing. National Club Challenge This will be the first week-end you can compete in the National Club Challenge. The Secretary circulated information about this to full Club members by email on February 24th so I won't be repeating it all here. It only costs $10.00 to enter and you can shoot all or just one of the shoots that will be held at MPB on March the 4th, 11th and 25th. To register go to the MPB webpage and click on "Enter an Event". We need as many members as possible to register to increase MPB's chances of achieving a place in the top three. You can also read about the Challenge on the Archery Australia website at - http://www.archery.org.au/Portals/22/2017%20General/News/2017%20Club%20Challenge.pdf Saturday Activities Morning Temporary members are welcome to start arriving from 9.30am for the indoor supervised practice shoot starting at 10.00am. Early Start This Saturday It's an early start for the official Club shoot this Saturday. The first round of the Club Championship Clout Shoot will be held in two sessions - one before and one after lunch. This means that there will be no Roo Shoot or private practice on the outdoor range for the day - see below, however. Club Shirts If you are interested in purchasing a Club shirt, see the Canteen volunteers. We have three styles and a variety of sizes on display so you can try one on. The cost is $40.00, or $45.00 with your name printed on it. There is also a range of other items, such as caps, bucket hats, wind breakers, sports bags and so on. Saturday Activities Morning Temporary members are welcome to start arriving from 9.30am for indoor coaching starting at 10.00am. Please sign in first at the canteen and present your temporary membership card. There will be no Roo Shoot owing to the Club Championship Clout Shoot. Members can practice in the indoor hall or join in on the temporary member coaching. Club Shoot For those not shooting clout there will be controlled shooting in the indoor hall during the afternoon. For those wanting something structured, there will be an unofficial 60 arrow 18m indoor shoot, so it's a good opportunity to learn how to score with no pressure. Otherwise you can take the opportunity to simply practice. You just need to synchronise with the whistle. The official Club shoot is 'clout'. This is your first chance at submitting a score for the Club clout championship. You are encouraged to shoot, but only if you are prepared and not using Club equipment. For new or temporary members it is worth taking a bit of time to go outside and have a look at what is going on with the clout shoot. It's worth walking out to the clout pad to observe the scoring process. Before doing this please ask permission of the Director of Shooting (DOS). As you approach the clout pad keep your eyes down so you don't walk into an arrow. Please keep well back until the arrows are pulled from the ground, then you can move in closer. It is also a Silver Arrow shoot. Silver Arrow shoots are an interclub competition run by our state governing body, the South Queensland Archery Society (SQAS). If you are interested here is a link to the policy - http://archerysqas.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/2017-Silver-Arrow-Guidelines-v7.1.pdf Clout shooters are to muster at the Club house at 9.30am and have their name on the shoot blackboard, with a view to a 10.00am start for the first 36 arrows. The second 36 arrows will be shot in the afternoon. Experienced members may stop reading now, but for the benefit of new members, what follows is a mini exposition of what 'clout' is. Clout archery is a traditional archery event having its roots back in medieval archery when archers would lob their arrows onto advancing armies - think Henry V and Agincourt. For this shoot there are shooting lines set up around the target range at distances ranging from 100 metres to 180 metres. There will be arrows flying high in the sky, all seeking out a poor defenceless little triangle of polystyrene in the far corner of the range that sits in the middle of a 'target’ that is laid out on the ground and is about 15m in diameter. As a consequence, it is not possible to hold our usual 20m novice shoot out on the range at the same time - far too dangerous! This is not a shoot for novices or those of you still using Club equipment, as it requires aiming techniques that are quite different from what most of you have been taught so far. It's also a good way to lose arrows if you don't know what you're doing. The pace of a clout shoot is very different from what you may have experienced to date. It can take quite some time to get through a 72 arrow shoot as the scoring process is very time consuming, which is why we are doing half the shoot in the morning and half in the afternoon. To the uninitiated and from a distance, it can look quite strange, with archers apparently walking pensively in circles and then standing around a lot, looking at their feet. As most of the shooting lines do not have any shade it is essential that you have a hat, apply sunscreen and drink plenty of water. Good shooting
To all members and visitors to MPB, unfortunately, due to the extreme heat forecast for this weekend, the committee has decided to cancel all outdoor planned shoots and activities this weekend. The indoor hall will still be open for coaching and practice. Whilst we know this is disappointing for many, we have had to consider the safety of our members and visitors in this extreme heat wave. If you are planning to head to the club to train, please ensure you drink plenty of water, keep yourself well hydrated and stay safe. We hope to be back to normal planned activities through the week and next weekend. MPB Committee.

South Queensland Archery Society (SQAS) Youth Camp This Week-end We are hosting the SQAS youth camp this week-end. There will be about 20 kids from MPB and other SQAS clubs, plus their archery gear, pillows and security blankets around the place. There will be areas around the Club roped off for the purpose. Just steer clear of these and all will proceed smoothly, as usual. Many thanks to MPB mothers Trina Bezzina (mother of Lara) and Kym Wood (mother of Jaymie) for putting up their hands to do some of the heavy lifting involved in running 'behind-the-scenes' aspects of this activity. Morning Temporary members are welcome to start arriving from 10.00am for the indoor supervised practice shoot starting at 10.30am. Please sign in first at the canteen and present your temporary membership card. This Saturday the scheduled shoots are - Long Sydney - 30 arrows at each of four distances (90m, 70, 60, 50m) on a 122cm target Sydney - 30 arrows at each of four distances (70, 60, 50, 40m) on a 122cm target Grange – 90 arrows at 60m on a 122cm target face Melbourne – 90 arrows at 50m on a 122cm target face Darwin – 90 arrows at 40m on a 122cm target face Geelong - 90 arrows at 30m on a 122cm target face Newcastle – (the novice shoot for beginners) 90 arrows at 20m on a 122cm target face Temporary members are welcome to do the novice shoot. You just need to write your name on the blackboard by 12.30pm. Bring you lunch, two biros, and a hat, and to use the supplied sun screen. If you're not sure what to do, ask someone. Good shooting
Thinking About Buying Equipment for the First Time? There will be an additional activity this week-end for those of you who are thinking in terms of buying your own, or you child's first kit. In particular we would encourage non-shooting parents to attend. At 10.00am, Paul Cartwright will be giving a talk about buying equipment, and hopefully demystifying some of the jargon. Paul will talk about the basics, general costs and options for where you can go to purchase. We have a basic specification document now for aspiring recurve archers, and will have this available for you. If you are contemplating buying recurve equipment this talk will be useful, but we will need to set you up with and experienced compounder to go in to the specifics. See you there. Name Your Arrows If you look on top of the steel cabinet just inside the roller door of the Clubhouse (not the indoor hall), or on the Clubhouse table, you will see a stack of arrows that have been retrieved from the target range and field course. If you've lost an arrow someone may find it and that's where it will end up. HOWEVER, if you wish to hasten the return of your arrow, put your name on it. This is a requirement of competition anyway so it's a good habit to get in to. There are plenty of ways to do this, but the quickest and cheapest is to go to a newsagent, buy a paint pen for a few dollars, and simply write your initials on the shaft just below the fletches. The pen will last forever and is pretty durable. Spirit pens simply don't cut it. Don't write your name on the fletches themselves as they can detach and then you're back to square one. Of course, there are fancier options for doing this, eg, personalised arrow wraps, but the paint pen is quick and cheap, especially if you're standing in the bow inspection queue and you realise you've forgotten to do it. Unclaimed arrows will be hoovered up by the Equipment Officer to be cannibalised for parts for Club arrows. Be warned. Saturday Activities Morning Temporary members are welcome to start arriving from 10.00am for the indoor supervised practice shoot starting at 10.30am. Please sign in first at the canteen and present your temporary membership card. Full Club members wanting to participate in the outdoor Club coaching Roo shoot are asked to be there by 10.15am so the shoot can start on time at 10.30am. Lunch Lunch is from about 12.00noon to 12.30pm. Temporary and new members are advised to bring their lunch if they want to shoot in the afternoon. The canteen has basic items like microwave pies, quiches and noodles. The Afternoon Shoot The afternoon shoot starts promptly at 1.00pm and you need to have your name on the shoot board by 12.30am, or you don't get to shoot the scored shoot. If you are a Club member, you also need to enter the event via Archers Diary in advance if you want to record an official score. You can do this on the computer in the Clubhouse, though it's more convenient to register in advance online from home, at your convenience. Temporary members are welcome to give the afternoon shoot a go. If you get tired and can't complete the shoot we ask that you let the Director of Shooting know before departing. We would like to see more members, especially the young fit ones pitching in more to help with setting up the shoot, rather than standing around watching other people do the work. Also, at the end of the shoot, we need people to check the bins, and if they're in need of emptying, take them across to the Club house. We have an easy day planned for the Club shoot at 1.00pm. The shoots are - Holt - 90 arrows at 50m on an 80cm target Samford - 90 arrows at 40m on an 80cm target Drake - 90 arrows at 30m on an 80cm target Geelong 90- arrows at 30m on a 122cm target Newcastle – (the novice shoot for beginners) 90 arrows at 20m on a 122cm target face
