TYRE TIP TUESDAY Tip 1 - How to know if your tyre needs replacing: I get asked this question a lot, so here is my tip; The only way to check if your tyres need replacing, is to check the minimum tread depth indicators (pictured). These are found in the grooves of all tyres and are what the police will use to check the legality of your tyres. (Remember; while a match head or a coin can give you an indication these are not legal indicators). You will need to replace your tyres before the tyre becomes level with the tread depth indicator, as once any of the indicators are level it's illegal. Depending on your tyre size, you can have up to 9 mm of tread (more with 4WD's) When tread reduces to less than 1.6mm the tyre is illegal and unsafe to use on the road. Even at 3mm of tread you will be driving with significant loss of wet traction due to shallower grooves and channels. Have a look at your tyres and see if you're safe!
