And so ends another block of tutoring Speech Pathology Masters students. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to meet and help my future colleagues during their course (and maybe even impress on them the importance of client-centred care). This is a talented and passionate group and I look forward to welcoming them to the profession at the end of next year.

A better way to care: Safe and high-quality care for patients with cognitive impairment...

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care have produced 3 resources aimed at health service managers, workers and consumers to improve the care of clients with cognitive impairment (dementia and delerium) within the hospital setting. It is part of the Caring for Cognitive Impairment Campaign to ensure safe and quality care for clients with dementia and delerium in hospital. Get on board and make a difference at cognitivecare.gov.au #Betterwaytocare. There are a number of campaign resources that can be shared. http://www.safetyandquality.gov.au/our-work/cognitive-impairment/better-way-to-care/

The Importance of Numbers

Here is another area in which we speechies work that hasn't occurred to many people. The inability to communicate about numbers, both saying and understanding them, can leave people very vulnerable. I can think of many occasions when I have assessed a client's ability in this area and they have been surprised to realise that numbers have 'lost their meaning'.
