🌾👀 Watch out for grass seeds! If you haven't already had trouble with the dreaded grass seed, make sure you stay vigilant! A keen eye will prevent grass seeds becoming a problem, so check your pets frequently! Certain types of grass seeds are shaped like a pointy arrow with needle-like tips. Once they are caught in your pet’s fur they can start to burrow aggressively into your pet’s skin with no way of escaping. Rarely, the seed may exit again on its own, but in most cases, it cannot! A painful abscess can form and this leads to the need for sedation and surgery to remove the seed or remnants. Keep an eye out for any lumps or swellings, particularly between the toes. Often your pet will be excessively licking the problem area due to pain and you may see discharge from a small wound. Occasionally, grass seeds may end up in your dog’s ear canal leading to intense irritation. If you notice your dog is shaking his head or persistently scratches the ears, a check up with us is essential. We recommend that you check your pet for grass seeds daily, especially after a walk - concentrate under the paws, between the toes, around the ears and in the armpit region. You might be amazed at the number of seeds that could be hidden in your pet's coat - and they are just waiting to cause trouble!

We hope everyone has a wonderful time celebrating NYE tonight with family, friends and loved ones! 🍾🎉🎆 Please remember that fireworks are enjoyed by people but many animals are frightened by them. Here are some tips for keeping your pets safe and happy during fireworks: 1️⃣ Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day. 2️⃣ Keep your dogs and cats inside during fireworks, preferably with their humans. 3️⃣ Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas. If your dog has been crate-trained and is comfortable in one, that is a good option. 4️⃣ Keep windows and curtains closed. Removing visual stimulation can also help calm dogs. 5️⃣ Put on moderately loud music or a TV to muffle the noise outside and to distract your pet. A small battery-operated radio may be a safe way to incorporate noise for distraction. 6️⃣ Make sure all your dogs are wearing their collars with ID tags. Dogs tend to become erratic and turn into Houdini when frightened. 7️⃣ If possible, lock your pet in a safe room that you have prepared. This will minimize the chance of your pet injuring itself or escaping if it becomes distressed. Otherwise, ensure all gates are locked and secured if your dogs are to be outdoors. 8️⃣ If you will not be able to accompany your pets at home, leave them something fun to do – treat-filled toys are a good idea which can distract them for periods of time. 🐱 Just for cats • Make sure your cat has somewhere to hide if they want to. Don't tempt or force your cat out as this will make them even more stressed. We haven't forgotten our pocket pets and birds! 🐹🐰🐦 • If your pets live outside, partly cover cages, pens and aviaries with blankets so that one area of their enclosure is well sound-proofed. Make sure that your pets are still able to look out. • Provide lots of extra bedding so that your pets can have something to burrow in. • Where appropriate, consider bringing them indoors. This may not suit all small animals as they may become more stressed with a sudden change in environment. HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVE!

☀️ Summer Tips For Your Furry Friends! ☀️ (Inspired by this handsome 10-year old Pug, "Gus") 1. Plan daily walks to be during the coolest parts of the day - you might think that dog paws are "invincible" because they are made of such thick skin, however they are actually very vulnerable to burns. Summer paw burns are common because us humans are wearing shoes and do not realise just how hot outside surfaces can be! 2. When outside for extended times in your yard, get your pup a kiddie pool. They will love you for this! 3. When driving with your furry friend in the summer, do be sure to turn on the car for a few minutes before you plan to leave. Roll down the windows to first allow heat to escape and then run the car’s AC. 4. Cooling bandanas are a very inexpensive, yet effective way of cooling your dogs down. Similarly, self-cooling mats can be useful for dogs which are indoors and outdoors (and in the shade of course!) Remember: HYDRATION IS KEY! 💦💦💦💦Always ensure your pets have access to fresh, cool water. You can always add ice cubes or frozen water bottles to keep things cooler for longer 😎❄️
