An internationally acclaimed tourist attraction, Sovereign Hill brings to life the colour and excitement of Australia’s 1850s goldfields providing a full day’s entertainment with hands-on experiences for the whole family.
It’s just like stepping back in time to goldrush Ballarat– from the hustle and bustle of Main Street where costumed ladies and gents parade their new-found wealth, to the excitement of the Red Hill Gully Diggings where visitors pan for real gold and it’s ‘finders keepers’!
Visitors can see a $150,000 gold pour, ride in a horse-drawn carriage and watch street performers, including the Redcoat Soldiers who march and drill before firing their muskets. Along Main Street, there are shops selling 1850s-style goods, hotels and schools to visit, and a theatre with goldfields entertainment. For the adventurous, there are underground mine tours with an inclined tramway ride. And those with a special interest in 19th century trades can chat with our skilled craftsmen at work in the blacksmith’s forge, the candle works, the wheelwright’s plant, the coachbuilder’s and the confectionery factory.
By night, Sovereign Hill presents its spectacular, multi-million dollar sound-and-light show, ‘Blood on the Southern Cross’ – the legendary story of the 1854 Eureka Uprising (a great Australian drama). A two-course meal with drinks is also available on-site at Sovereign Hill prior to the show.
Accommodation is also available on-site at Sovereign Hill Hotel. With King Coil beds, free Wi-Fi and a guest bar and lounge, Sovereign Hill Hotel is a popular choice for any traveller. There is a variety of accommodation options ranging from our recently refurbished Governor’s rooms ideal for couples, superbly appointed Sovereign rooms for families and the corporate traveller and large, affordable family units.

A note from one of our staff, Trooper Pete - "After 23 wonderful years of working at Sovereign Hill, I am retiring today. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Sovereign Hill, the staff and visitors have been like my family. I have developed many friendships both personally and professionally, my motto has always been: 'Treat everybody the same and with respect, you never know who you are speaking to'. I would like to thank everyone I have made contact with over the years. I wish you all the very best. - Trooper Pete" We know many visitors have enjoyed Trooper Pete's demonstrations and interactions. Over the years we've received many 'then and now' photos of children visiting Sovereign Hill and having a photo with Trooper Pete, and then visiting many years later and recreating their childhood photos with Pete again! We wish Trooper Pete all the very best!

Happy Easter! 🐰 Enjoying a Raspberry Drop hot cross bun with our chocolate eggs today😋 These hot cross buns (and fruit ones too!) are available at our Hope Bakery today and tomorrow ❤️
Our Wheelwrights do the occasional timber bend at Sovereign Hill for special projects. It’s not every day that they have the opportunity to do so, so we recently captured the team in action. This timber bend is being used used to manufacture wheels for a 77mm Krupp Canon from World War I. This bending machine is a Defiance machine dating back to the 1890s and is capable of bending up to 6 inches thick x 12 inches wide boards of timber! A rare machine to see in action, anywhere in the world.
