Some people have asked me about the colours I use on my products from the Middle to late Medieval period. In the attached pic is a copy of a 1548 Italian Dyers manual that was found intact still in its original cover during examination of a room once used as a leather workshop in northern Italy. (The exact date is known as it was printed on an inside page.) This is the colour palette I try to stay with. (Although black is known to have been used with the careful application of Iron Sulphides, the margin of error is very small for the leather to be damaged and quickly rot. This may be the reason why it was not shown in this manual.)
