I love it when the tradesman comes! Not just because of all the wonderful things in his saddlebags, but the stories he tells of the places he’s been to. If you ride northwards, he says, the villages often have earthworks and palisades around them, and if you keep on riding you come to the territory of the Picts, the ‘painted people’.
