Wadley Regional Medical Center congratulates Janet Harness, RN on being selected as Wadley's 2017 IASIS Chairman's Award Honoree. Here's Janet's story... “If we all took more time to focus on helping others, what a wonderful place this world would be,” believes Janet Harness. After losing her mother as a young girl, Janet learned to rely on others – particularly her father, siblings, and other family members, who helped her overcome the many obstacles created by growing up without a mother “My experiences in life have taught me to persevere and focus on others,”she says. Today, Janet’s love of children and compulsion to help those who are in need drive many of her life choices. “One of the many things that are important to me,” she says, “is Operation Christmas Child, which provides children in disadvantaged countries with a Christmas gift they can call their own. I have fond memories of letting my girls pick items for these kids, who would receive a special package containing many of the things we take for granted.” In addition to participating in Operation Christmas Child, Janet volunteers with the Girl Scouts as a Brownies and Girl Scouts leader. She also participates in the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program, allowing her kids to pick children in the program and find presents for each child. “The Toys for Tots program is also special to me,” she says, “as my son-in-law is a Marine.” (The program is run by the United States Marine Corps.) For Janet, helping is a way of life. “I am deeply touched when I see a person in a severe position of need,” she says. “This impacts me greatly, and compels me to act on their behalf. My father and grandmother both instilled in me many of the character traits that guide me each and every day. They taught me the importance of putting others before myself and recognizing how much I have been blessed. Helping others who are less fortunate than us is one of the most important things we can do as humans. Everyone should strive to make things better for other people, for it is better to give than to receive.” Janet will be attending a Gala, honoring all of the other Honorees later this month in Nashville, TN.
