The 26th BIG: An international sports event hosted by HKU in June 2015 with 6 participating universities over the world competing in 8 different sports  The Biennial Intervarsity Games (B.I.G.), formerly known as T.I.G. (Triennial Intervarsity Games) from late 1970s to early 2000, has its origin dating back to 1949 as an initial cricket and tennis contest between the University of Hong Kong (led by its then Vice-Chancellor, Sir Lindsay Ride) and the University of Malaya in Singapore. Over decades, it grew from a friendly game between two universities into a quadrangular international event for student athletes to compete in a wide range of sports on a biennial basis. With the participation of more than a thousand young athletes and various cultural/social functions complementing the contests, B.I.G. has grown into a large scale inter-university multi-activity sports event.

The upcoming Games, which will be hosted in Hong Kong in mid-June 2015, will no doubt maintain the high standards set in the past and continue the tradition. Aiming at promoting sports among university students and the public at large in Hong Kong as well as improving the standard of sports among the participating universities, the 26th BIG will have approximately 6 participating universities across Asia, Europe and Australia, with at least 600 local and overseas athletes competing in 8 different field of sports during the 9-day event. Thousands of spectators from the public would be attracted by the games.
