Five-Star Hostel in the centre of Lerwick.  Islesburgh House was built in 1907 for Andrew Smith, a prominent Lerwick merchant with numerous business interests.
The Zetland Education Committee purchased the property in 1945 and, on September 23rd 1946, Islesburgh House Community Centre opened.
In 1950 an 8 bed men only hostel was opened. A total of 27 bednights for that season earned an income of £11 8/- (£11.40). Back then a bednight cost the princely sum of 1/6d (£0.07½).

An ideal base for the budget traveller hoping to explore all that Shetland has to offer, Islesburgh House Hostel provides dormitory style accommodation or exclusive use rooms, some en-suite.
Fully open mid March to mid October.
The Hostel can also be booked out of season, please contact us for details. Early booking recommended during large festivals eg Up-Helly-Aa, Folk Festival, Accordion & Fiddle Festival.

It’s for locals too…!!! Please see attached poster of the Islesburgh House Hostel, Lerwick’s award winning hostel. We want to emphasise that, for many Shetlanders, getting home from Lerwick following a night out (which isn’t necessarily that late) can be anything from an inconvenience to an impossibility. There is an alternative. We offer top quality accommodation at budget prices from a bed in a shared dorm for only £16.00 adult/£12.00 junior. These are our new off-peak rates, applicable from November to March inclusive apart from Up Helly Aa week. We have a number of exclusive use rooms, for example two adults sharing a twin room is £37.00 while four people can share an exclusive, en-suite room for £54.00. A full price list can be forwarded to you on request. Give us a phone on 01595 745100 to discuss your requirements and make a booking. Why not really enjoy your stay in Lerwick without the hassle of getting home late or missing the end of your movie or concert..?? Groups welcome, no curfew, safe and secure. Ideal for families. If you require a poster to print we can email you a high resolution A4 copy. Please feel free to share our poster on your Facebook page or website.
