Tolson Museum is the living history book of Huddersfield. In 1922 it was gifted to the Huddersfield Corporation as a War Memorial in memory of Legh Tolson's nephews, Robert and James who both died in the First World War.

The museum holds several collections including the history of Huddersfield and its Roman connections.

Admission is Free and we have a small gift shop and serve light refreshments including biscuits and hot drinks.

Now selling at Tolson Museum is this lovely new local book ‘Picture Walking Historic Almondbury: Then and Now' by local author Vivien Uff, which tries to summarise Almondbury’s history in 104 images. A perfect Christmas gift! Almondbury dates from a prehistoric fort on a hill with fantastic views across beautiful countryside. It was on an ancient woollen trading route from London to the Yorkshire Dales bringing it travellers and traders on foot and horseback from earliest times. The author believes it’s important to keep history alive for our children and granchildren, e.g. for them to know that 100 shops were replaced by 15 and that the internet era may reduce that further as almost everything can be bought by touching a button! She hopes the photographs and personal anecdotes will bring memories alive for exiles living far away and perhaps for elderly residents who have always stayed here. Huddersfield Local Studies Library kindly lent some of their pre-1900 photos to blend in with those taken recently, creating some 'then' to match the 'now'. Costing £9.99 the new book is available at Tolson Museum which is open Sat-Sun 16/17 Dec and 23/24 Dec from 12noon-4pm.
