Johnny Murtagh enjoyed a very successful weekend with two winners to continue a very positive year for Curragh based trainers. True Valour landed a Maiden at Limerick on Saturday with Murtagh saying after the race, “He had a little issue last year, something small and we just gave him the time off but I'm very happy with him. He was always going to be a very nice three-year-old for a maiden. Colin was happy with him and he said he settled well and quickened up well. He did what he had to do on ratings. We'll have a look at the Tetrarch Stakes next week - it might be a bit too soon for him but if he comes out of this race well, we might let him take his chance and see how good he is." Too Familiar made an impressive start to his career for Murtagh winning the 2 year old Maiden at Navan at odds of 20/1. The trainer said afterwards: "That's a bit of pressure off as it's a new syndicate (Fitzwilliam Racing) that we put together. It's their second runner and first winner. I've always liked her and she showed a lot of pace. She has been working very well at home. I said to Niall to ride her for luck but he said she was brave, she pricked her ears a little bit when she went there but the gap opened up lovely and she's quickened well. There is a fillies race in Naas for her now. The syndicate are still dreaming of Ascot so you never know. The dream is still alive!" Another Curragh based trainer Christy Roche won a competitive Handicap at Limerick with Bay Hill and Brave Display trained by Patrick Prendergast won a Handicap at Dundalk last Friday.

Positive turf season start for Curragh based trainers Curragh based trainers have enjoyed a very positive start to the 2017 turf season with wins at both Naas and Cork. Downforce landed the Listed Cork Stakes for trainer Willie McCreery who commented after the race, "He loves that ground and he just goes through it when others can't. The ground, to me, is barely raceable and he was the only one who could handle it. We'll have to try him on a bit better ground now - I won't ever run him on firm but he has ran crackers of races on good ground in the past. We'll keep stepping him up, he's a grand horse but today was his Derby as we have to make hay with him early on, and late on, in the year." McCreery was back in the winner’s enclosure following the victory of Elm Grove in the Apprentice Handicap, while Curragh based trainer Johnny Murtagh was also in the winners enclosure when 25/1 shot Maximus Daia landed the seven furlong maiden. Afterwards Murtagh stated “I’m glad he won because it confirmed what we thought of him at home but I was worried after his Dundalk runs. I was sure he’d win a maiden but obviously he didn’t handle the surface at Dundalk. Coming here I thought the ground would probably be a bit too heavy fro him and while he is not big, is very strong.” Kevin Prendergast won the first two year of the season with Moonlight Bay at Naas last weekend. "She probably handled the ground better than most of them. She was bred at Lumville Stud which is one of Sheikh Hamdan's studs in Co. Offaly, and they run a good outfit there. Hopefully she goes on from this." Fille du Septembre made a successful career start when winning the two year old maiden for Dermot Weld on the all weather track at Dundalk last Friday. “She was a bit sluggish out of stalls, and had a rug on as she is a bit temperamental. Thankfully they went a good pace, and she finished off the race well,” said jockey Pat Smullen, who added I was really happy the way she picked up between horses and really wanted it. She was bought to be a sharp early filly and she's all that. Hopefully she will be a bit more professional the next day and improve off it." Johnny Feane who has enjoyed a very successful season at Dundalk was back in the winners enclosure following the success of Swish in the 7 furlong Auction race
