George’s 217  is owned and operated by Frank Vafinis, the 2nd generation of George’s Steak Pit which was founded in the mid 1950 ’s by George and Vangie Vafinis . Known for “The BEST Steaks in The South”, one of their secrets to success is the famous open pit. Grilling  freshly cut steaks, chicken and fresh fish over  hickory logs assures you a taste sensation you will not soon forget. Combined with an extensive wine list, delicious homemade desserts and courteous, professional service in an elegant setting, creating a dining atmosphere that will bring you back again and again.

After years of hosting parties up to 65 people on site and catering larger events off premises,  Mr. Vafinis decided to expand operations.  He purchased the Old Belk Department Store in Downtown Sheffield. After extensive renovations, the building offers a 3500 square foot ballroom, appointed with the original hardwood floors, exposed brick, crystal chandeliers, and detailed woodwork. The ballroom accommodates up to 300 people and may be divided for smaller parties.  The lobby mimics the restaurant with a full service bar and detailed woodwork that opens to the front veranda. A courtyard in the back allows for open air gatherings perfect for cocktail parties and smaller receptions.

Every step has been taken to ensure the perfect place for events including onsite suites that step out to the courtyard, ideal for bridal and groom parties or corporate guests.
