Food Banks need our help. There is a significant seasonal drop in food donations this time of year even though hunger does not drop or go away. Our local banks also report a steady increase in food requests from the elderly. Please keep bringing non-perishable donations to the narthex and we will get them to our local Food Banks for people in need.

Thanks Tara Barber for sharing this: Sweet Pentecost - “Won’t you be brave, Church? Won’t you preach love with such boldness that some people think you’ve gotten into the wine? Don’t you have something to say? Because we need you to say it. God already sent His son, and He sent His Spirit, and the Spirit sent us.”

HELP SERVE HOT MEALS FOR THE HOMELESS Volunteers needed Saturday, May 21 Alki UCC is feeding those in need next Saturday, May 21 from noon to 2:00 pm at Bartel's in White Center. We need two large batches of soup and folks to assemble cold sandwiches. We also need elves to help set up the area and equipment, distribute clothing and supplies, and take down. It's a wonderful way to spend two hours of your day on Saturday - it's easy! Such a small commitment with a HUGE reward.

An Open Letter to Our Brothers and Sisters in The United Methodist Church

FROM THE PASTOR . . . As most of you know, I have very strong feelings about the level of gun violence in our country and am putting what time and money I can toward getting more commonsense laws in place that could help reduce that violence. But I’m not just referring to homicides; more than 60 percent of the deaths from guns in this country are suicides. There are still gaps in our laws that make it hard to keep guns away from people threatening violence against themselves or others. We know that the vast majority of mass shooters and individuals who commit suicide show signs of their intentions, but our law renders families — often the first to see those signs — unable to take life saving action. Initiative 1491 is a 2016 Washington State Initiative that would provide for Extreme Risk Protection Orders, allowing family members and law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily suspend a person’s access to firearms if there is documented evidence that the person poses a serious threat to themselves or others. The person subject to that order must surrender their guns to police and will not be able to buy, sell or possess other firearms for up to one year. Initiative 1491 must receive over 340,000 valid signatures by July 8, 2016 to appear on the November general election ballot. I will have some petitions with me at church on Sunday and ask that you please consider signing your name so we can get this smart initiative on the ballot this fall. Thank you so much, Pastor Diane

Please join us at the All Church Progressive Dinner - Saturday May 21, 5:00pm at Alki UCC Most of us want to know our fellow church members and friends better and we don’t feel like we have enough time during or after worship hospitality hours. During that brief time we are keeping an eye out for how many cookies our children are touching, adding cream to our coffee, and trying to add up how many cookies we have “accidentally” consumed. All Church Progressive Dinner was first held over 20 years ago We meet in one home for hors d’oeuvres with six to eight people, move on to another home for dinner with a different group of six to eight people, and end our evening all together with a dessert buffet in Anderson Hall. The evening is for adults and each of us provides part of the meal. Childcare can be made available at church if you contact us by May 8. Children in childcare are fed dinner, and join us for dessert. Please sign up to join! You will have a wonderful time. We make it a bit of a mystery as you do not know where you are going for your first course until you open your email that afternoon. You don’t know where you are going for dinner until your hors d’oeuvres host opens the group’s envelope just as you are ready to leave! Sunday, May 15, right after church is the deadline to sign up. The dinner is Saturday, May 21. The reason to commit ahead of time is to give the organizers time to set up the groups. The more people we have, the more new people you get to meet. And the more selections at the dessert table! The festivities kick off at 5:00 pm. Registration due by Sunday, May 15. Fill out a form at church or click here to sign up online. — Vicky Smith & Wendy Henderson

Tara Barberr, Wendy Blight,, Amy Hitchens and Diane Sadler Darling were the Alki UCC folks at the Conference Annual Meeting last weekend. It was really a great meeting. We met Courtney Stange-Tregear, the newly-hired Conference Minister for Church Vitality, and the keynote speaker and worship leader was UCC musician and composer Rob Leveridge. A new Samoan congregation, Feagaiga Fou, from Anchorage, Alaska was officially welcomed into the Pacific Northwest Conference (pictured) and Wade Zick was installed as the new Director of Pilgrim Firs Camp and Conference Center (Wade was with us two weeks ago for “Camp Sunday”).Diane attended two excellent workshops, one on Gender Identity and Inclusion, and the other on White Congregations and Black Power. Of course, best of all is the “family reunion” time we get with friends and colleagues, and the reminder that we are in covenant with more than 85 other churches that make up the Pacific Northwest Conference UCC.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Alki UCC, The Seattle Foundation has had trouble getting its donation system up and running today. If you have gone to the website you may have discovered that there was no way to make a gift. We will make a new FACEBOOK post when the Seattle Foundation tells us their system is back up and running. I apologize for the frustration you may have had trying to make a gift to Alki UCC this morning. Thank you for hanging in there with us. Dav'ne Stahley, Alki UCC FB Administrator.
