Sankranthi involves showering kids with mixture of Bhogi Panlu (to keep evil out of their vicinity and to welcome good health and prosperity). Apart from blessings from the parents and adults, the bhogi shower in USA (with limited access to things) can include following: * Berry fruit (ripe or dried) * Color ful petals (local grocery stores carry variety of flowers) * Candy and Choclates (smaller sized ones or lollipops. This will make your kids happy) And a gift of their choice (well.. lets not use the gift as part of the shower :). But just hand it over to them) India being agriculture oriented culture, parents showered kids with abundance of their wealth, i.e. agriculture products. This includes rice and sugarcane (well.. does it mean NRIs can include their W2s, H1Bs, visas and GCs :)) At Big Bazaar, we went an extra mile to procure the sugar cane and the regi panlu (slightly dried though). Come grab the stock while it lasts and pass culture to kids. Sorry... No Visas or Green Cards :)
