A major habitat restoration project on the shores of the upper St. Clair River providing the public with a place to learn about nature and to enjoy many of the exciting activities it has to offer. In the 1900s, this 4,300 feet stretch of shoreline of the Upper St. Clair River, now known as Desmond Landing, was home to several industrial services and shipping facilities. This resulted in the loss of almost all native vegetation and important fish spawning and nursery habitat. The site was donated to the Community Foundation by Jim Acheson and his company, Acheson Ventures, with the promise to restore the area and make it publicly accessible. Restoration begins with removal of industrial debris and invasive vegetation and involves many other components, such as planting of native vegetation, construction of migratory bird stopover grounds, and spawning and riparian habitat for fish, freshwater mussels, herpetofauna, and other wildlife. This project will also provide the community with a pedestrian trail, access points for fishing, canoeing and kayaking, an outdoor classroom, a fishing pier, and several spots for freighter and wildlife watching. The Blue Water River Walk project is the first restoration project to take place in this area in over 100 years and will produce the longest stretch of naturalized shoreline in the Upper St. Clair River.
