Dear Campus Community, As most of you are aware, on Sunday morning, parts of Plymouth and Holderness experienced a weather-related event that caused major flooding in one of our parking lots. Following a well-organized, multi-agency effort to quickly address a fast-moving and unpredictable situation, I am happy to report that while there was damage to vehicles and many of you were inconvenienced, there were no injuries related to the situation among any of our PSU community. As of this morning I can confirm that all impacted vehicles have been removed from the affected lot and we are working with individual students to assist with their specific situations related to their vehicles. This morning I participated in several meetings in Plymouth with New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu. These meetings were an opportunity for the Governor and his team to see first-hand the situation and hear directly from those affected. The Governor is committed to determining how state officials might assist in both recovery from the current situation and working with PSU, Plymouth and Holderness to mitigate future flood situations. The situation on Sunday happened very quickly and the river overflowed its banks at an “unprecedented” rate due to an ice dam downriver. We utilized our current notification system to communicate to the entire campus community via email and text messages. While this system worked well, it isn’t fool proof. We are always looking for additional ways to reach our campus community in a timely way. We’ve learned from this event and are looking at adding additional channels for immediate communication when emergency situations arise. As you know, spring hasn’t even started yet, so we have a few more weeks of snow, rain, melting and freezing. We are monitoring the weather on an hourly basis and will be in contact when circumstances warrant. I would urge us all to be vigilant over the coming weeks, watch closely for alerts from campus safety officials and check your phone and email often to assure you’re receiving the latest information and alerts. In addition, we are looking at ways to provide students with an opportunity to participate in monitoring the river via an online application. We will share this with you when it’s finalized. I want to thank each of you for your patience over the past couple of days and am appreciative of the assistance many of you have given to those affected by the flooding situation. As always, my office welcomes your feedback and suggestions. Sincerely, Donald L. Birx President
