Va. National Guard encouraging “buddy checks” Sept. 22

The Virginia National Guard is encouraging its members to check in on their battle buddies Sept. 22, 2016, to make sure they doing well and help them find resources if they are experiencing hardship or in crisis. As part of the initiative, Soldiers should call, text or make plans to get together to catch up on what’s going on each other’s lives. They can also show their support by posting on social media with the #VaGuardBuddyCheck hashtag.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen share their memories of that day as well as express the reasons behind their service to commonwealth and country in the five-part video series “Why I Serve.” Since Sept. 11, 2001, more than 15,000 Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen have mobilized on federal active duty for homeland security missions and combat operations, sustainment support, security and peacekeeping in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Kuwait and other locations around the world. Brown take charge of the Petersburg-based 276th Engineer Battalion, 91st Troop Command as the new command team during a combination change of command and change of responsibility ceremony Aug. 21, 2016, at Fort Pickett, Virginia. Col. William L. Zana, commander of 91st Troop Command, recognized Lt. Col. Colin S. Noyes and Command Sgt. Maj. Daryl J. Plude, the outgoing command team, for their outstanding duty performance. Squads compete for top honors in 276th Engineer Battalion

Soldiers assigned to the Rocky Mount-based 229th Chemical Company take first place in the squad competition for the Petersburg-based 276th Engineer Battalion, 91st Troop Command held Aug. 19-20, 2016, at Fort Pickett. Virginia. Events in the competition included a written knowledge test specific to a Soldier's military specialty, weapons disassembly, assembly and functions check, night land navigation, six-mile ruck march and situation training lanes focused on reacting to enemy contact and reacting to an improvised explosive device. Squads from the 229th Chemical Company, Cedar Bluff-based 1033rd Engineer Company, West Point-based 237th Engineer Company and Powhatan-based 180th Engineer Company took part in the competition.
