Kent State University School of Music

Norton City Schools is grateful for the number of opportunities provided to our students by local colleges and universities, such as Kent State University. The Norton High School Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform in concert with the Kent State University Wind Ensemble on Sunday, March 5. What a great and unique experience for our students! Thank you Dr. Jesse Leyva and the Kent State University School of Music for this opportunity!

Thank you for participating in the career tech survey we posted. We had over 1500 responses from participants in the Four Cities Compact . The three potential programs receiving the greatest interest were Animal Management and Care, Biomedical Engineering, and Cyber Security. We are continuing to explore these options as well as others including HVAC. Please watch for further updates.

The NMS Academic Challenge Team competed this past Saturday in a tournament at Copley that hosted 36 middle school teams! Each of our four Norton teams were competitive in the areas of history, literature, fine arts, science, and current events, with one of our teams finishing with an impressive record of 5-3! A special thank-you to Mrs. Weatherly for being a reader at the tournament! Our next tournament will be on Saturday, March 18th in Stow.

Norton Girl Coders was a hit yesterday! All ten 7th and 8th grade girls got to explore some creations in Scratch and start making their own animations. The also received some binders and creativity journals for brainstorming their ideas.

We still have a few spots left in the Girl Coders Club. This program is now open to 7th grade girls as well. Applications can be turned in to the middle school office. The program starts February 21st!

Norton Girl Coders Club Starting! By 2020 there will be 1.4 million jobs in computing-related fields. Research shows women are on track to fill just 3% of these jobs. Girls in 8th grade have the opportunity to be part of an after-school club to learn more about creative computing. This club is funded by a Best Buy grant and will include many different resources for coding: Scratch, Girls Who Code, Code.org, etc. The club starts Tuesday, February 21st and will be held after school until 4:15pm.
