Peak of the Week: Kearsarge North is located near North Conway and has an elevation of 3,268 feet. In 1915, the peak was named Pequawket Mountain for a Native American tribe that lived in the area and the name was changed in 1957 to Kearsarge North. It is sometimes confused with Mount Kearsarge which is located in Merrimack County. The summit fire tower was built in 1913 and offers 360° views of the Presidential Range.

What are your Halloween weekend plans? You don't want to miss the thrills, chills, and fun happening right here in the White Mountains. The Town of Littleton's Halloween Harvest Festival is on Saturday with a Zombie Walk, and the lighting of the Jack O' Lanterns on the Ammonoosuc River. This is also the last weekend of The Ghoullog at Cranmore Mountain Resort, the Return of the Pumpkin People in Jackson, and Silly, Spooky Halloween at Santa's Village, Jefferson NH. Be ready to do the Time Warp at the The Colonial Theatre in Bethlehem as they present the film version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturday night. Peak of the Week: Hedgehog Mountain is located in Albany, NH on the Kancamagus Highway. This peak in the Sandwich Range Wilderness has an elevation of 2,532 feet and is on the list “52 With a View.” The best trail to access the 4.6 mile loop trail is the UNH Trail which was named for the UNH Forestry Camp that was near the trailhead from the 1940’s-1964. From the summit and rocky ledges, amazing views can be seen of Passaconaway, the Tripyramids, Mount Carrigain, and Mount Chocorua.

Have you ever stumbled upon an old cellar hole while walking in the woods and wondered what building used to stand there? Whose house once stood in that spot? Who were those people? Walking in the woods around the White Mountains, you may come across quite a few of these cellar holes. Small towns and villages that no longer exist once dotted the landscape and have now been swallowed up by time. Many of these “Ghost Towns” came into existence when logging was the main industry in the region and disappeared without a trace once the lumber was gone.
