Happy Monday! Meet Biggie, an 11-month old West Highland Terrier. Biggie presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists during our emergency hours for inappetence, vomiting and lethargy. Biggie was seen by Dr. Rebecca Aldoretta and Dr. Candyce Thompson, two of our veterinarians. An abdominal ultrasound and blood work were performed to rule-out the possible causes of Biggie's symptoms. Biggie was hospitalized, closely monitored and put under IV fluids to stabilize him. After the abdominal ultrasound results came in, it was found that his gastrointestinal issues were due to the thickening of his gastric wall. In order to definitely identify cause, gastric biopsies are necessary. After carefully going over the best options for Biggie with his owners, it was agreed that because of his improvement, the biopsy will wait and he was going to be treated supportively. Biggie is currently back home feeling a lot better. #HappyMonday #MVS #YourPetSpecialists #PetSurgery #PetCare #VetsNTechs #Westies #DogLovers #PetsOfMiami

It's Surgery Saturday! At Miami Veterinary Specialists we have a professional and caring team of Board-Certified Surgeons. Partnered with access to the equipment and support staff necessary, our specialists provide the very best surgical care for your pet. Our surgeons are specialized in, but not limited to: neurologic, orthopedic, and soft-tissue surgery. Checkout this action shot of Dr. Juan Sardinas, one of our Board-Certified Surgeons. Here he is performing a laparoscopic surgery. This surgery is a non-invasive procedure where the assistance of a tiny video camera and other instruments are used. The camera then transmits an image of the organs inside the abdomen onto a monitor. Remember that our surgeons are available on Saturdays for consultations, surgeries or rechecks. To schedule an appointment, please call us at 305-665-2820. #MVS #YourPetSpecialists #SurgerySaturday #PetCare #PetSurgery #DogSurgery #CatSurgery #VetCare #MiamiVets #VetMedicine #PetEmergency #SouthMiami #CoralGables #CoconutGrove #Kendall #Doral #Miramar #Homestead #MiamiBeach #VetTechs #VetsOfMiami #Miami

Happy Friday! Meet Bentley, a 9-month old sweet Golden Retriever. He presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists for a consultation with one of our surgeons. According to his owner, Bentley fractured his hindlimb 9 weeks prior to the presentation. He was taken to his primary care veterinarian, who placed a splint after the incident. After the splint was discontinued, Bentley's owner noticed slight lameness on his hindlimb after playing with the house mat. Bentley was seen by Dr. Laura D'Amico, one of our Board-Certified Surgeons. She performed radiographs of Bentley's hindlimb to take a closer look. The radiographs revealed that the fracture was not completely healed. Dr. D'Amico's recommendation was to keep Bentley from running, jumping and playing with other pets for the next 3 weeks. If the lameness perisists, Bentley will return for a reevaluation. Here he is with Dr. D'Amico and two dedicated members of our staff. Bentley just couldn't stop giving away puppy kisses! #HappyFriday #MVS #YourPetSpecialists #DogsOfMiami #MiamiDade #DogsOfInstagram #VetCare #PetCare #GoldenRetrievers #MiamiVets #Kendall #Doral #CoralGables #CoconutGrove #Pinecrest #VetMed

Happy Monday! Meet Whiskey, a 5-year old cat. He was presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists during our emergency hours for a possible urethral obstruction. According to his owner, Whiskey had been vocalizing more frequently and appeared to be very uncomfortable. Whiskey was seen by Dr. Rebecca Aldoretta and Dr. Stephanie Cerovsky, two of our veterinarians. Whiskey's urethral obstruction was confirmed and he was also diagnosed with a FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease). A urethral obstruction is a common condition found in male cats. It occurs when the urethra (tube that drains out the urine) develops obstruction. Obstructions are the result of inflammatory material, mucus, crystal and calculi. On the other hand, a FLUTD is a collection of clinical signs that include urination in inappropriate places, painful/difficult urination or partial/complete urethral obstruction. Our doctors closely monitored Whiskey for a few days and placed a urinary catheter. Its function is to flush and drain any sediment blocking the urinary tract. They also performed blood work along with a urinalysis (urine exam) to make sure that there were no other signs of infection or other systemic illness. Whiskey was discharged from MVS after being able to urinate successfully without a catheter. He is now back home feeling a lot better! #MVS #YourPetSpecialists #VetsnTechs #MiamiVets #VetsOfMiami #Miami #SouthMiami #CatsOfMiami #CatsOfInstagram #CatLovers #Cats #Kendall #Doral #CoconutGrove #CoralGables #Pinecrest #SunsteDrive #MiamiBeach #Brickell #PetCare #CatCare #HappyMonday

It's Surgery Saturday! Meet Ollie, a 1-year old male Dalmatian. Ollie was referred to Miami Veterinary Specialists by his primary care veterinarian due to a partial urinary obstruction. According to Ollie’s owner, Ollie seemed very painful and was vocalizing while trying to urinate before starting to have stranguria and pollakiuria (straining to urinate and excessive abnormal frequent urination). Also, lab results from his primary care veterinarian revealed urate crystals in urine. Ollie was seen by Dr. Sarah Evans, one of our Board-Certified Surgeons. Ollie was diagnosed with uroliths based on his history, urinalysis and quick ultrasound that identified stones in his bladder. Radiographs did not reveal the stones in his bladder; therefore, they were suspected to be urate stones which are radiolucent meaning they cannot be seen without contrast material. A urinary catheter was placed and maintained the night before the surgery. Dr. Evans then performed a successful cystotomy which is a surgery to remove the stones. Numerous stones and sand were removed from his bladder and urethra. At surgery, his bladder was thickened and inflamed. Intravenous infusion of analgesics was administered for the first 12 hours after surgery and then intravenous fluids were continued to flush his bladder. Stone analysis confirmed that the stones were urate stones, meaning that Ollie will require a special diet long-term and is at risk of forming stones again in the future. Some Dalmations form urate stones because their liver does not process purines (proteins) properly, resulting in excessive nitrogen or urate formation in the kidneys and urine. Some of the Dalmations require medication to help prevent urate stone formation in addition to a special diet. Since the surgery, Ollie has been able to urinate frequently and well. Ollie has healed well from surgery and his sutures have been removed. He will see his regular veterinarian regularly to have his urine tested for signs of stone recurrence. He is feeling great now! #MVS #YourPetSpecialists #Dalmatians #VetCare #MVS #PetCare #PetSurgery #DogsOfMiami #DogsOfInstagram #SurgeryReady #VetsNTechs #MiamiVets #VetLife #PetER #Miami #SouthMiami #VetsOfMiami #VetMedicine #Kendall #Doral #CoconutGrove #CoralGables #MiamiBeach #Pinecrest #Miramar

Happy Friday! Meet Delai, a precious 6-month old Dalmation. He presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists for a surgery consultation for hindlimb paraplegia. Delai has a history of being thrown off of a balcony a few months ago back in his native Egypt. Injured, he was placed into a shelter and then rescued by an organization that brought him to the U.S. Delai is currently being cared by a loving foster parent. She took Delai to a primary care veterinarian who performed radiographs. They revealed healed vertebral body fractures with a dorsally displaced malunion of the fractures. He was non-ambulatory in his hindlimbs, unable to feel his hindlimbs, and developed numerous soft tissue wounds due to pressure points. Delai was then brought in to MVS for a surgery consultation in hopes that a surgery could help him walk again. Delai was seen by Dr. Christopher Potanas, one of our veterinary surgeons. Dr. Potanas closely assessd Delai and his radiographs to determine if surgery was the right answer for Delai. It was also found that Delai's wounds had a multi-drug resistant infection. In order to treat this, Delai will need to undergo 4 injections per day with an expensive antibiotic to help the wounds heal. Unfortunatley, Delai’s hindlimb paralysis cannot be corrected with surgery. However, Dr. Potanas took Delai’s measurements in order to get him a new walking cart from Eddie's Wheels for Pets Last week, Delai came in for a recheck looking great on his new cart. According to his foster mom- “He has not stop running ever since he got his new chariot and he loves to chase squirrels." Here is a video of Delai on his new hot wheels! National Puppy Day will make you happy

Happy National Puppy Day! National Puppy Day was founded exactly 10 years ago by pet expert Colleen Paige. Happy Monday! Meet Pocholo, an adorable 8-week old Golden Retriever pup. He presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists during our emergency hours with an acute onset of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, decreased appetite and green nasal discharge. Three days prior to his presentation, Pocholo was adopted by his owners. Pocholo was seen by Dr. Luis Garcia, one of our emergency veterinarians. In order to rule out the possible causes of Pocholo’s symptoms, Dr. Garcia performed a series of procedures. Performed lab tests and radiographs confirmed Pocholo was suffering from gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis is the inflammation of the intestines and stomach, causing vomiting and diarrhea. He was also diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection which explained the green nasal discharge. Pocholo was hospitalized and put under supportive care (medications, supplementation and fluid administration). It took a few days to stabilize Pocholo and to have him interested in food again. However, once his health started to improve, he was discharged from MVS and was able to go home to his new loving owners. #MVS #YourPetSpecialists #DogsOfMiami #DogsOfInstagram #PetEmergency #DogEmergency #goldenretriever #puppies #puppiesofinstagram #DogLovers #SouthMiami #MiamiVets #Miami #CoralGables #CoconutGrove #Kendall #Doral #VetCare #VetMedicine #VetsNTechs #HappyMonday
