Phillip Shelby, like Hawes, won last Saturday night at Marysville. Shelby won the exciting Sport Mod main event. He holds a 36-point edge over Mike Smith. Adam Ermolenko will look to continue his winning streak and remain the point leader in the Economy Winged sprint car division. He holds an eight-point edge over Cameron Haney Jr. The best championship battle is currently in the Hobby Stocks division. Mel Byers only leads Cy Cooper by just two points. Anthony Doubledee and Matt Magenheimer are tied and sit just seven points back of Byers. The Street Stock drivers will get a rare chance to race at Marysville. Marysville Raceway FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Hawes Earns First Career Winged Sprint Car Win Marysville, CA (5-13, 2017) – Four years ago Jeremy Hawes made the jump from wingless sprint cars to winged 360 sprints cars. After a lot of disappointing finishes and struggles, his hard work finally paid off. Hawes won the exciting 25-lap winged sprint car main event and earned his first career win in the competitive division. Hawes was challenged throughout the event by slower traffic and three-time track champion Colby Wiesz. In fact, Wiesz passed Hawes at least twice during the race only to have Hawes drive back into the lead a few moments later. Needless to say, Hawes was ecstatic in victory lane as he celebrated with dad, mom and Robert Petersen. Billy Wallace came home in the third spot. Mike Monahan drove up to the fourth spot. Youngster Dustin Freitas rounded out the top five. Wiesz won the first heat race. Tyler Seavey dominated heat two. Rowdy McClenon returned to action and won the third heat. Wiesz was the fastest car in qualifying. Twenty sprint cars appeared for point race #5. Promoter Dennis Gage had to be smiling as 87 race cars entered his pit area for the normal Saturday night point race. It was nice to see a full grandstands as people took advantage of the discounted Mother’s Day ticket special. The IMCA Sport Mod division was given another shot in the arm because of the West Coast Sport Mod Tour was in the house. A brilliant 34 cars attended the event. In the end it was a local named Phillip Shelby who won. Joining Shelby in victory lane in what seemed to be half of the entire town of Marysville. Shelby is a popular driver at the top of his game. Last night he was leading the race at Chico until a mechanical issue sidelined him late in the race. “I have to thank my friends who put the car back together while I was at work today,” said Shelby in victory lane. Shelby also thanked third place finishing Fred Ryland. Nick Spainhoward finished in the second spot. Spainhoward should be credited with a great race in where he doesn’t have a ton of laps at Marysville but looked fast all night. Ryland thanked his wife who gave up her car tonight so Fred could race. “My car was wrecked and she was nice enough to step out of her car so I could run tonight,” said Ryland. Michael Johnson finished fourth and his now the current point leader of the West Coast Sport Mod Tour as they leave Marysville after point race # 3. Shane Devolder had another solid showing and finished fifth. The Cooper brothers finished first and second in the semi-main event. Todd Gomez, Les Friend, Jimmy Ford and Igor Gandzjuk were the final four transfers to the main event. Shelby won the first heat race. Johnson grabbed the honors in heat two. Jordan Hagar did an excellent job in winning heat three. Local hot shoe Damian Merritt won the fourth heat. Cody Spencer won an entertaining wingless sprint car main event. Even though only four cars entered, Spencer and Gary Paulson waged a good race amongst each other for the win. In the end, it was Spencer holding off Paulson. Paul Vandenberg and Bruce Morrow finished out the order. Paulson won the lone heat race. The Dwarf Cars put on another great show. Buddy Olschowka took home the honors during a competitive main event. Yet, the real star of night was the fans and drivers who donated money to help the family of family racer Joe Bresnyan, who was tragically killed earlier that week. The Dwarf Cars went four wide to salute the Bresnyan family before their main event. Jeremy Blackshere ran one of his best races and finished second behind Olschowka. Danny Wagner finished third. Wagner continues to be one of the top drivers. Mike Reeder is another racer who is always up front and finished fourth. Brian Quilty continues to get the job done and finished fifth. Wagner, Reeder and Blackshere all won their respective heat races. So, it wasn’t surprising that they all finished within the top five during the main event. Rob Waldrop has the right set up. He was the class of the field Saturday night during the Vintage Hardtops. Waldrop won the main event and heat race. Full results at www.marysvilleraceway.com END

Marysville Raceway Email: thennig@sbcglobal.net Phone: (530) 350-7275 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Bobby Butler Earns First Career Win at Marysville Marysville, CA (April 29, 2017) – Sacramento’s Bobby Butler accomplished something that he has been searching for since 2013, a winged 360 sprint car main event victory. After 25 laps this past Saturday night, Butler can now be called a main event winner. Butler led all 25-laps in earning is first career sprint car win. “It probably won’t set in until I get home but right now it just seems so unreal,” Butler said in a post-race interview. Butler was only slowed down by a few cautions but to his credit, they never seemed to disrupt his rhythm and he cruised to the win. In fact, he held a 3.112 second advantage over Heath Hall at the finish line. Hall drove a good race to pass a few cars and get the second-place finish. Jeremy Hawes, still in search of his first career win, put together another strong night to finish in third. Tyler Seavey continues to gain valuable experience and gets closer towards the front. Tonight, he finished in the fourth spot. Fast time qualifier for the second week in a row was Woodland’s Peter Paulson. During qualifying he turned a 12.652. During the feature, he was very competitive and came home in the fifth spot. One of the bright surprises this season has been Emily Williams. In only her third career winged 360 sprint car start, she led all eight laps to win the first heat race. Mike Monahan, last Saturday’s main event winner, crossed the finish line first to win heat two. Defending track champion Brian Cooper returned to his home track and won the 20-lap Sport Modified feature. Cooper was back up front and looked comfortable in leading the field. It was a strange championship point night. Phillip Shelby had mechanical and tire issues in the main event and finished ninth. Howard Law was second in points and unable to attend. With those two struggling the door was left wide open for other drivers to try and capitalize. Mike Smith is right there in the battle and finished fifth tonight. Mike Merritt was over two seconds behind Cooper at the finish but comfortably ahead of third place finishing Willie Horn Jr. In fact, Horn led the early part of the race until Cooper made his presence known. Shelby and Horn each won their heat race. Mike Walko led all 20 laps to capture the Super Stocks main event. He beat James Castleberry to the checkered flag by 2.244 seconds. Walko thanked his long-time wife for all her support while talking on the microphone in victory lane. Brad Magenheimer won the lone heat race. As always, the Hobby Stock main event featured lots of close racing and entertaining action. In the end, it was Matt Magenheimer who ended up in victory lane. Mel Byers drove a great race and was close enough at the end to give Magenheimer a run for the win. Kyle Cheney led a bit of the race and ultimately finished third. Cy Cooper came home fourth. Magenheimer clean swept the night of racing by winning the only heat race of the evening. Racing will return in two weeks at Marysville Raceway on May 13th point race #5. The winged 360 championship is shaping up to be a battle between multiple drivers. Jeremy Hawes is the current leader but guys like Tyler Seavey, Brad Bumgarner, Mike Monahan and Korey Lovell all have their sights on the leader. The sprint car main events have produced some exciting times and memorable finishes. Last week, 61-year-old Monahan won the race and proved that there is always room for veterans in our sport. Usually, it is the young guys grabbing the headlines. Phillip Shelby won the IMCA Sport Mod main event and is now the current point leader. Howard Law had a rough night and slipped back to second. Jeff Bye Jr. and Shane Devolder are tied for third. The wingless sprints are back on tap this Saturday night. Gary Paulson has been the most consistent performer this year. He leads Cody Spencer by a mere one point. Bruce Morrow holds down the third spot. Local hero James Castleberry leads the Super Stock surge into this Saturday nights racing action. Castleberry is a champion and will be tough to beat in 2017. Rod Oliver and Mike Walko are the two drivers able to challenge Castleberry for the championship. Marysville Raceway Email: thennig@sbcglobal.net Phone: (530) 350-7275 At 61 Years Old Mike Monahan Still Getting it Done Marysville, CA (April 22, 2017) – Proving that sprint car racing isn’t just a young lions sport, 61-year-old Mike Monahan of Reno, NV led all 25 laps to win the feature event Saturday night at Marysville Raceway. “I am just lucky to be surrounded by good people,” Monahan said in victory lane alluding to his crew. Monahan got the win but it wasn’t as easy as it might sound. Michael Ing is the epitome of the young and hungry lion. Not only did Ing try everything he could do during the 25 laps to get around Monahan, at one point he even tried passing the No. 49 on two wheels. Ing had a big run to the outside of Monahan in turn two only to see him bicycle up on two wheels and somehow miraculously save it. Ing drove a hard race but ended up second. Jeremy Hawes is having that championship style year. While he hasn’t won yet, but it will come, he is putting together consistent finishes. Tonight, he came home third. Peter Paulson earned the fastest lap during qualifying when he turned a 12.562. Paulson continued to have a successful night and finished fourth in the 25-lap main event. Colby Wiesz started deep in the field and drove up to a fifth-place finish. Bobby Butler dominated the first hear race for the win. Brad Bumgarner held off Wiesz to capture the win in heat two. Ing made a late race pass for the lead and win heat three. A total of 19 cars entered point race #3. Phillip Shelby is as good as they get when it comes to IMCA Sport Mods at Marysville. Once again, he ended up in victory lane after the 20-lap main event. “I have to thank all my family, friends and everyone who helps me,” Shelby said in victory lane surrounding by at least 20 people. Tyler Rodgers was the hard charger of the night and came all the way to finish second. Rodgers looked like a real challenger as he continued to improve. Les Friend won his heat race and then went on to finish third. Damian Merritt had a consistent night and finished fourth. Shane Devolder rounded out the top five finish. Devolder did win the first heat race of the night. Gary Paulson won the lone heat race for the wingless sprint cars. Even though the car count was small, the main event was good with an outstanding three car battle between Terry Schank Jr., Paulson and Spencer. Those three put in a great race. In the end, it was Schank getting the win. Spencer held off Paulson for second. Buddy Olschowka and Mike Reeder had the best finish of the night. Reeder led the final lap but coming for the checkered the two banged wheels, sparks were flying and these two guys were going for broke. As they raced towards the finish line it was Olschowka who edged Reeder for the win. Olschowka finished second in the B main and should be commended for getting the win after transferring out the semi-feature. Scott Dahlgren was a factor all night and ended up third. Ryan Winter was up front, then stopped and had to restart at the back. He drove back up to a fourth-place finish. Jack Haverty finished in the fifth spot. Early race leader Shawn Jones exited the track with a mechanical issue. He had the car to beat. Danny Wagner and Colby Wiesz were also early favorites to win the race but each retired to the pits during the race. Reeder, Wagner and Wiesz each won their respective heat races. Reeves won the B main event. Adam Ermolenko won the Economy Winged sprint car race. The race ended on lap nine when the second and third place car crashed in turn one. Jaylon Deas is credited with the second-place finish. Ermolenko also win the lone heat race. END
