Start off November with a relaxing visit to the museum. Get a cup of coffee or a steaming hot London Fog from C+M, located at the L.A. Times Central Court. Enjoy lunch at Ray's & Stark Bar for farm-to-table cuisine and handcrafted cocktails. Step into BCAM and wander through Richard Serra's Band, a curved sculpture whose sheer mass is disguised by the ease and fluidity of its presence in the gallery. Check out Chris Burden's kinetic sculpture Metropolis II and see more than a thousand miniature cars zooming through roads and freeways. On the other side of campus, visit "Sarah Charlesworth: Doubleworld" and discover a new perspective on photography. Charlesworth examined the role that photographic images play in contemporary culture—as coded forms of representation, as symbols, and as icons. For more on the artist, check out exhibition curator Rebecca Morse's post on Unframed. Please note that LACMA will close early on Saturday, November 4. The Resnick Pavilion and BCAM will close at 1 pm. The rest of the museum will close at 3 pm. Visit our website to plan your visit accordingly.

On the evening of June 21, 1941, the Russian artist Marc Chagall and his wife Bella arrived in New York, which they would soon make their new home. After the fall of France to German forces in 1940, the Jewish couple was no longer safe living in the Provençal village of Gordes and they were happy to receive the invitation of Museum of Modern Art director Alfred H. Barr, Jr. and the help of Varian Fry and the Emergency Rescue Committee to emigrate to the United States. Though Chagall was fascinated by the scale and pace of this new and unfamiliar city, which he described as a “Babylon,” he spoke very little English and struggled with painful feelings of homesickness. The Chagalls surrounded themselves with a group of Yiddish- and Russian-speaking expatriate artists and intellectuals, recreating a sense of the community they had left behind in Europe. A year after settling into his new life in America, Chagall was given the chance to draw upon his memories of Russia through the production of Aleko, a ballet based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin and set to Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Trio in A Minor. The story follows an aristocratic youth who joins a band of Romany travelers (formerly referred to as “gypsies”), falls in love with the chieftain’s daughter, and eventually murders her when she leaves him for another man.

Explore beguiling and beautiful ancient Maya figurines in association with LACMA’s exhibition "Ancient Bodies: Archaeological Perspectives on Mesoamerican Figurines." The exhibition highlights the importance of archaeological context and includes 23 exquisite figurines portraying an ancient Maya resurrection ritual recently excavated from a royal tomb at the Classic-period Maya city of El Perú-Waka’, Petén, Guatemala. The symposium features four specialists whose presentations will bring ancient Maya figurines to life through discussions of ancient ritual and politics, as well as archaeological research and conservation work associated with interpreting and preserving these miniature masterpieces.

When imagining school children at the museum, the first image that usually comes to mind is one of kids in uniforms streaming out of a yellow school bus shepherded by teachers and chaperones. Another kind of learning community that doesn’t fit this image, but for whom the museum is also a valuable educational resource, is the homeschool community. If you are a homeschool parent or educator, here are some tips for organizing a group visit or accessing teaching resources.
