I could tell right away that Alyssa and I would hit it off. She seemed a bit shy at first, but opened right up. We talked about some of the things she likes and I realized just how much she is like me when I was her age! We go to the movies, she LOVES bowling and she will probably tell you her favorite outing was ice skating at Crown Center. I was also able to include her as my guest on "Take Your Child to Work Day", which included learning to code (I work for a sports-tech company) and having our very own soccer clinic at Children's Mercy Park with SKC! My favorite memory would absolutely be the first time she hugged me! I try to let her lead the way in our friendship as much as possible so as not to push too hard, too fast. I decided to surprise her at school with lunch one day (Panera is one of her faves!) and I got to sit with her and hang out for a bit! I think the break from the norm was exciting for her. When we were finished, she walked me back up to the office and gave me a big hug as I was leaving. I melted! It's funny how I never could have imagined the impact our match would have on ME! I thought I would be helping a child that just needed a little something "extra" in her life. Honestly, I finally realized how beneficially that "little" something extra has been for me. It's such a nice break to shut down completely from everything else and focus on just us for awhile. She's raw, she's (brutally) honest and she has so much to tell! She is always asking questions and makes me think about things in new ways. #LittleShoutouts
