Walking Weather is Here to Stay Maine weather is beginning to warm up so we can finally start to venture out of our homes to enjoy the sun. With our many walking paths, groomed trails and butterfly sanctuary at OceanView, there are lots of different routes to get some fresh air. And from Gilsland Farm Audubon Center to Mackworth Island, OceanView provides transportation to many nearby scenic Maine trails. Walking just thirty minutes a day has a multitude of benefits. Not only can walking help reduce body fat, decrease the risk of cancers, heart attack or stroke, it can also increase bone density. Make sure you're cleared for walking by your doctor. Take appropriate safety precautions such as having water, wearing sunscreen, proper footwear and walking attire, and bringing a cell phone, a walking buddy and make sure someone else knows where you're headed. Roxie OceanView resident Nancy got this Border Collie from a neighbor. Roxie was about a year old then and is now 15! In her earlier years, Roxie would visit various care facilities as a therapy dog, along with a whole repertoire or tricks she would perform, bringing smiles to faces. Roxie and Nancy still bring smiles to faces when seen walking around our Whipple Farm neighborhood. Though, Nancy thinks Roxie's favorite activities now are eating and sleeping!

Today was our Annual Soup Challenge to benefit the OceanView Resident Assistance Fund. OceanView Chefs went ladle-to-ladle to see which pot of soup our community liked best! Third place went to Chef John, with his savory French Onion; Chef Jill's exotic Coconut Curry Crab Bisque came in second; and Chef Betsy's hardy Chicken Vegetable was awarded first place. All of the soups were exceptionally delicious, which did not make voting for one easy! Hats off to our entire team of incredible chefs who prepare and serve outstanding cuisine daily - our mouths and tummies thank you!

Here's to Heart Health Heart health is very important since heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women according to the CDC. One out of every four deaths in the United States is caused by heart disease which is actually more harmful to men than prostate cancer and more harmful to women than breast cancer. Risk factors for heart disease include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, poor diet, inactivity, smoking and alcohol use. Genetic factors cannot be prevented but can be controlled. Start by finding out your cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and then manage them with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Second, learn the symptoms of a heart attack which vary greatly between men and women. They include persistent or recurring chest pain or pressure, pain in your arms, back, shoulders, neck or jaw, heartburn-like stomach pain, lightheadedness or dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea and sweating. Knowing your numbers and watching for these warning signs will help lower your risk of heart disease. Here's to a Healthy Heart!
