Description

ad

October 25, 1923 - a presidential proclamation designated Carlsbad Cave National Monument, then on May 14, 1930 Congress declared it a national park.  Beauty and wonder; above and below

Rocky slopes and canyons, cactus, grass, thorny shrubs, and the occasional tree, who could guess at the hidden treasures deep underground? Beneath this rugged land are more than 119 known caves - all formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone. To plan your visit, go to the park's official website: www.nps.gov/cave .

Activities

A variety of cave tours are available—from the self-guided Natural Entrance and Big Room routes to guided tours that range from walking the paved trails of Scenic Rooms, called the Kings Palace Tour, to crawling through narrow passageways in Hall of the White Giant or Spider Cave. But the fun and beauty are not only underground. In the park Visitor Center, you will find educational exhibits, ranger led talks and programs, a bookstore run by non-profit partner, Western National Parks Association, and a restaurant, gift shop and kennel operated by park concessioner, Carlsbad Caverns Trading Company. Outdoors there are opportunities for hiking, backcountry camping, picnicking, and from May to October, watching the incredible exodus of Brazilian free-tail bats out of Carlsbad Cavern at dusk.

Creation of each formation depends on water that dripped down into the limestone bedrock and into the cavern. Trickling downward, the water absorbed carbon dioxide gas from the air and soil, formed a weak acid. This acidic water dissolved a little limestone and absorbed some of the basic ingredients needed to build most cave formations—the mineral calcite. It takes billions and billions of drops to create the thousands of cave formations. NPS/Michael Larson #CarlsbadCaverns #FindYourPark #EncuentraTuParque #NationalPark #NPS101

Most people hike down the Natural Entrance Trail hike into the cavern. However, a hike up can give you a equally memorable experience. This photo is looking up toward the Devil's Hump. If you didn't hike up or look back while hiking down, you would miss this view. The hike up the Natural Entrance Trail can be strenuous, gaining 800 feet (244 m) in elevation on a 20% grade in 1.25 miles (2 km). Walking down into the cavern via the Natural Entrance Trail allows you to get up-close views of many magnificent formations. Located about three quarters of the way down the trail are a group of totem pole stalagmites known as the Witch's Fingers. These totem poles are formed by a single drip of water impacting the same spot over thousands of years, causing them to grow tall and narrow.
