Home - WT Give-a-Goat

I have had a front row seat to watching God work in a special way the past eight years on the campus of WTAMU. It takes about 10 weeks each spring for WT campus ministries to plan the most random of ideas, the Give-A-Goat Shack-A-Thon. This random work combines ideas from works such as Heifer International and Habitat for Humanity; we build shacks, and live in them for a very short while (as best as I can tell the "Shack-A-Thon" fundraiser has it's roots in H for H), in an effort to consider what it would feel like to have less, and in an effort to raise money to buy goats for a desperate people across the globe. Tomorrow, hundreds of students from a variety of beliefs and backgrounds will converge on the east lawn of Old Main in an effort to help people suffering from terrible drought and famine in Turkana, Kenya. The Christian Relief Fund has been aiding this area for some time, and this is the sixth year the students of WT will give goats to the people of Turkana. Milton Jones, president of the Christian Relief Fund, recently shared how they have drilled some 50 wells in this region. Last year, during the Shack-A-Thon program, Francis Bii, the Kenyan man who buys and delivers the goats in Turkana, told us how the typically nomadic people of Turkana will begin communities around the wells. These are the communities where the goats are delivered. Last year I asked Francis about the region of Turkana. He reminded me that the area just to the north is constantly at war. The region to the north east is center for terrorist activity. The region to the south, between where he lives and where he buys the goats, is plagued with pirates. To top it off, when I asked (I learned this was a silly question) if the people of Turkana are able to use the large Lake Turkana for water and other resources, he taught me that a) it is a salt water lake and b) it is home to some of the largest crocodiles in the world! We have learned over the past eight years that a goat means life in the region of Turkana, Kenya. Considering that reality, it is simply AWESOME, and I can only praise God, for the students of WT and the supporting community who have given/raised over $184,000 for this cause. Knowing many of the workers for CRF personally, I am doubly excited because I know that as the goats are delivered, so is the Gospel message of Jesus's death, burial, and resurrection. Sometimes you look up and you think, "I never saw that coming." I've always liked building forts as a kid, but it's not my hobby as an adult. One thing is for sure, I know less about goats than I do about building a shack. And yet, about 10 weeks out of the (now) last nine springs, God has used the strange term of "Give-A-Goat Shack-A-Thon" as a platform for his amazing love and power. Shack-A-Thon is tomorrow. If you want to be involved, there are many ways. Start by visiting http://wtgiveagoat.com/. Praise God!

Please keep McKenzie Mayfield in your prayers. Perhaps you already know that she was hospitalized yesterday due to a very serious health situation. Thankfully, she is doing better this morning. She is in ICU at BSA and graciously requests no visitors at this time, however, her family greatly appreciates your prayers of thanksgiving and prayers for continued improvement.
