Today, June 2, marks the anniversay of another of our Line of Duty Deaths: Christian "Chris" Schoen died Sunday, June 2, 1912 after a wall collapsed on him while fighting the Lion Car factory fire. From a Daily Telegram article written in 2012 by Mark Lenz... The fire department was called but flames gutted the factory within three hours, after which a light rain helped extinguish the blaze. Unfortunately, veteran Adrian fireman Christian Karl Schoen, the captain of Hose Company No. 3, was killed by a falling wall and firefighter Leo Robb was injured. “The collapse of the wall was so sudden that it was a narrow escape for those who did escape,” the Telegram reported. “Captain Schoen was a moment too late; he was struck senseless and died almost immediately, his back broken and his skull crushed by the falling bricks.”

Today marks the 53rd anniversary of one of our line of duty deaths: Birger Johnson- Died March 20, 1964. The fire department had been called for a grass fire between University and Williams Streets. Mr. Johnson was stricken with a heart attack while standing next to the engine. This had been the 2nd grass fire in less than 2 hours that the department ran. The resuscitator was called and he was rushed to Bixby where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Today, January 11, marks the anniversary of another of AFD's line of duty deaths (LODD's)... Norman McKenzie- Died Monday January 11, 1960. The department was dispatched for a fire at the Stearns Manufacturing Company at about 10 P.M. Mr. McKenzie was operating the pumper on Center Street off the hydrant in the Kewaunee Mfg. parking lot. He was not actively engaged in the immediate area of the fire. A police officer talked to him at about 11:30 P.M. and he did not complain at that time of feeling ill. At midnight when the firemen started rolling up the 2 1/2" hose for the pumper, he was not around. A search was started for him and a police officer found his hat along the railroad tracks. Other police officers and firemen joined in the search and Mr. McKenzie was found lying on an iron plate near the tracks. He had removed his coat and his hat had been knocked from his head when he fell. A resuscitator was used but without success.
