SKIPTON CASTLE - STOP 2 A Castle here since 1090 when Robert de Romille built a primitive fort with timber ramparts that didn’t put off rampaging Scots on raids of Northern England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. The Clifford family were granted the property by Edward II in 1310 and Robert Clifford commenced its fortification but with his new stronghold not yet finished he was killed at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 . Skipton remained the principal family seat until 1676 but the family banner still flies over Skipton Castle today with the consent and blessing of the current Lord Clifford of Chudleigh . Skipton Castle is a fascinating place to visit and to understand its important role in our history include this stop in either a Bronte or Dales tour .
