Lighting ! Is it Important? Why is it Important? I will try and Explain Lighting comes in many form factors and types and I will try and cover all the basics here, what they are for and why. In its Broadest form, the lights we provide to our pets habitats will be for 3 main reasons... 1/ Photosynthesis 2/ Behavior and Health 3/ appearance Photosynthesis! Lighting provides vital energy to photosynthetic plants and animals. As the primary light source (and in most cases, the only light source), proper aquarium lighting is essential for any system that contains photosynthetic organisms such as plants, anemones, or corals. This also Includes planted Reptile/Amphibian Terrariums and Vivariums. These would typically include 50/50(white/Actinic) lights for marine aquariums to mimic the underwater environment. Full Spectrum Sun/Daylights for the freshwater planted tanks. Behavior and Health! Lighting also influences fish behavior and physiology and is vital for the overall health and well-being of the entire aquarium. They are more comfortable in their environment and behave as they would in the wild. With Reptiles making sure they are getting the correct UV output is important as this affects their overall growth as well as dietary habits, also be aware that the wrong lighting can damage and even harm our pets. Appearance! This is more of an Aquatic specific item although does apply to some reptile lighting. These are specific colour enhancing lights that tend to be more of a warmer spectrum of light intended to make your fishes natural colours look more radiant. This would be something only recommended for a fish only aquarium, and even then in conjunction with other light sources. So whether you have T8 Lighting, T5 Lighting or the ever more popular Led solutions, remember to get the right light for your pets requirements. The Lights are On But No one's Home! This is a simple truth that many of us overlook. We come home we switch the lights on and look at our beautifully cared for Aquariums/Vivariums/terrariums unaware of our prized pets suffering. This is down to one simple fact that we have all been guilty of one time or another, we simply forget how long we have had the bulbs. They are on, we can see them and they look perfectly fine. However, most specialist bulbs will lose their intensity over time. Totally undetectable visually but none the less there effectiveness diminished. Although great strides have been made to increase their effective life they still need to be changed long before the light goes out. We recommend that bulbs are changed between every ten to twelve months regardless if they still turn on.
