Closed until 13th April 2018 We are now closed until the 13th April following a very successful Up Helly Aa week. It was good to see so many visitors in the museum from around the world and to hear how much they had enjoyed the Up Helly Aa experience.

New Scalloway Museum website. A review of all our digital media was undertaken recently by an external consultant (Tuminds). This review was funded by HIE in Shetland. As a result the trustees agreed that our website should be updated and given a fresh look. This work has now been completed and the new website has been published. The site address is: www.scallowaymuseum.org

The 2018 "Up Helly Aa" festival will take place on Tuesday 30th January. The Scalloway Museum's Up Helly Aa opening dates for this festival will therefore be from Saturday 27th January 2018 until Saturday 3rd February 2018. Our normal opening times will apply. We then close for a while but will open again for our summer season on the 13th April 2018. During that weekend there are some special events being planned; but more about that later!

A visit to the museum on 12 August by a group of Norwegians. During WWII their relatives, who lived on an island called Lånan, were actively involved in the Norwegian resistance. Following the breakup of the resistance group, most of the people on the island were evacuated to Scalloway on 1 September 1944. The visitors were tracing the story of their relatives' arrival in Scalloway, where they stayed while in Shetland, and information on the some of the men's subsequent service on the Shetland Bus operations.

A full house at the Scalloway Museum There was standing room only on Tuesday night for the book launch by Catherine Emslie. The evening started with music, followed by readings from "A Shetland Childhood" by Catherine, more music, poetry readings, and ended with the sale of her book where Catherine was kept busy with book signings. Another successful evening at the museum.
