Craving Chocolate (or other sweet treats)?? Chances are its actually the sugar and fat content that you are craving.... In some cases, the richness of chocolate -- because of its fat content -- is what makes you crave it. Instead of chocolate, consider eating a serving of raw or roasted nuts to satisfy your need for something rich-tasting. While a single 1-ounce serving of nuts contains between 160 and 200 calories and is high in fat, the majority of the fat content is monounsaturated, which can help improve your healthy cholesterol levels. In turn, the majority of fat in commercial chocolate is unhealthy saturated fat. As well, nuts are part of the protein foods group and can provide needed variety to your recommended protein intake. The USDA recommends between 5 and 6 1/2 ounce equivalents of protein foods each day for a balanced diet. One ounce equivalent is 1/2 ounce of nuts or seeds, such as almonds, cashews and pumpkin or sunflower seeds.
