Probably the wrong time of day to be posting this but I've just had a conversation with a hiit'er about sleep. Her goal isn't necessarily to do 10k steps a day on her fitbit, eat like a rabbit, kill herself with training. It's something much more simple (although a real challenge for her) and something that often gets overlooked when working on fitness and health. SLEEP 🌛💤 The effects of lack of sleep on our bodies is astounding. We need sleep as much as we need food and water, they're crucial to good physical and mental health. If you're struggling to lose fat and feel like you're doing everything you can - eating well and training several times a week, sleep should be high on your list of priorities to address. Some people naturally need less sleep than others - fair enough. Studies have shown that not getting enough sleep can increase your bodies production of cortisol (the stress hormone) gherlin (the hunger hormone) and reduce leptin (the saiety)hormone. Literally just these few little things can cause major shifts in your mental health and ability to make healthy choices through the day. During sleep your body repairs itself and build up it's immunity to be able to fight off infection and disease - again absolutely fundamental not only for training recovery but also for a healthy life. I could write war and peace on this subject but I don't want to send you all to sleep 😂 Bottom line is - you'll know if you're not getting enough sleep. Easier said than done for people with busy lives and/or kids. But you need to out sleep as high on your priorities as eating and drinking. If you've got kids maybe you were rigid about their bedtime routine when they were babies (I was - bath, bottle, bed at the same time every night) Make your own routine - 💤Try and stay off your phone's late at night, the blue light it emits is helpful when your brain is trying to switch off. 💤Have a bath, wind down. 💤Don't be worried about being self indulgent and going to bed with a good book as soon as the kids are in bed, the dishes can wait, your health is far more important. 💤Plan your days to include an earlier bed time. 💤Play some sleep meditation on YouTube, I've sworn by this when I've been really stressed out. 💤Consider taking a magnesium supplement - another post for another time but the vast majority of us are magnesium deficient and this really is a little life saver for mood and sleep.
