August lawn care tips and advice :- Ouch its the hottest month of the year! Most of the lawns you see are yellow, scorched and lifeless, hopefully not yours (if you've been following my tips), if your lawn has gone like a freshly cut straw field, worry not, your grass is not dead, there are a few things you can do to rejuvenate your lawn quite quickly, you'll notice that you don't have to mow while the lawns in this condition but you can give it a really good rake over disturbing the top few millimetres of soil and give it a good soaking during the evening...the disturbed soil will allow the water to get to the roots much quicker also give your lawn a good feed, a soluble fertiliser is best in this current state as it doesn't sit on top of the grass waiting for it to rain before feeding the starving lawn. If your lawn is still green "well done you" but equally you still have to work quite hard this month to ensure you lawn stays loverly and green, mow the law as normal remembering not too short as the grass will dry out quicker, water if its in dire need and feed with a soluble fertiliser during the evening. Important tip :- Keep an eye on how dry your lawn is, water if its absolutely necessary and use a soluble fertiliser as your lawn is crying out for nutrients as the hot weather really takes it out of the grass. Remember to check in with me each month where ill be posting some more tips and advice.

July lawn care tips and advice :- The heat is definitely on now! As last month your lawn should be growing fast, so keep on top of your mowing, and if we get extended periods of dryness you may wish to consider watering that's if there is no hose pipe ban, personally i don't like to water unless its life or death, if you've followed my steps in past months your lawn will be drawing water from your soil, my belief is that if you water regularly you grass becomes dependant on it and instead of the roots growing down to seek water the start growing towards the surface and undo all the hard work you've put in. but if you do decide you want to water make sure you do this during the evening when the sun has gone down other wise you will burn the delicate blades. An additional thing you can do to help prevent drying out is aerating your lawn, i personally wear spiked shoes when i mow, this does three jobs in one action, the aerating will allow air to the roots and promote growth and secondly it breaks up the hardening soil allowing rain water to get to the roots quickly before evaporating and thirdly allowing nutrients when you fertilise with after cut to get to the roots quickly. Important tip :- Keep on top of raking and mowing this time of year to help suppress weed growth, Also try to mow your lawns in the evening or when the sun has gone down, this will also help to prevent yellowing and scorching. If by now your lawn is a little straw like due to the heat wave we've recently had, you probably won't need to mow for a few weeks...so nows a really good time to weed and feed your lawn...if you have lots of weeds and/or you have moss, you'll get better results if you de-thatch/scarify first...if you'd like I offer a scarifying service from only £15 per hour to help transform your lawn.
