A Simple Music Player for dementia. Playing music to people with dementia from their formative years vastly improves their cognizance and lucidity
Welcome

Playing music to people with dementia from their formative years vastly improves their cognizance and lucidity - the effects are dramatic, and are widely recognised by all dementia and alzheimer professionals.

E2L have developed a 'Simple Music Player' with supporting research undertaken by the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering (BIME), which indicates both the benefits of providing people who have dementia with music they enjoy, and the ease of operation that such people require. Verbal communication is often difficult due to short term memory loss but improving the quality of life at home, and avoiding institutional structures, is greatly enhanced by providing music from earlier years.
The problem being that many with early stage dementia find controls difficult to remember or manipulate.

Lovely message received this morning which makes it all worthwhile .... I just wanted to let you both know that Nana passed away peacefully last week at the age of 104. I was so glad that in her final 10 weeks she was able to enjoy the music she grew up listening to (including songs her father used to sing to her as a young girl). Very special. Thank you both so much for playing your part in that. I am forever grateful. — L***n x PS. I've attached a recent picture of her because she’s gorgeous and I love to brag when it comes to Nana O*****e!

"I wanted to write and thank you for the SMP. I have given it to my wife who has a horrible form of Alzheimer’s called PCA. I put it on her lap and told her to lift the bar. It began with Willie Nelson singing Always on My Mind, and almost immediately she was singing along with the music. Now it’s playing Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and I have not seen such pleasure on her face in a very long time. I thank you, and I know my wife, if she could, would thank you as well." B** G******t

From an Australian user: I just want to thank you for your wonderful machine, which I recently purchased for a friend with Lewy Body Dementia. Her downhill deterioration is distressing, but a month or so ago she told me how much she was missing her music - she had a fairly broad musical taste but mostly classical. .. a neighbour helped me with the attachment of a security chain to the back of the box so it could be anchored to her beside table and not moved by other patients. The staff and our friend’s relatives have a simple code for the ‘bike’ lock, so it can be moved from her locker if necessary. Today I received the following text from our friend’s daughter: "Just wanted to let you know that the player was such a help with Mum today. She was quite anxious and upset when I got there today. She came outside and didn’t want to go back in but I finally managed to get her upstairs in her room, which was in disarray. I put on the music and after listening for about 15 mins Mum commented on how it was relaxing her." The staff ask if we would set it up in the lounge room so that all the patients might enjoy it! I think there will be a number of further sales arising from this particular player. We are enormously grateful to find this comfort for a very difficult form of dementia. Thank you,
