Business English Trainers' Conference 2017

Bob Dignen of York Associates opened the conference with a thought-provoking session. Taking the audience through leadership solutions used by project managers, he urged the audience to concentrate teaching on what will help clients work in English, as separate to working on the client's English. Topics covered from using Post-it notes for teaching vocabulary, how to overcome not being an expert in a specialist area, moving to online tuition, Business English in the digital age and more. Speaker Jack Prince, of British Study Centres, said ''There aren't many events in the UK where Business English is the focus. We need to be able to adapt and find new things, and this is a great place to do that.'' Pete Sharma brought the day to a close with a roundup of ideas for using digital tools for training. Maurice Cassidy, chair of Business English UK and Business and Specialist Centre Manager at International House London said, ''It's been a fantastic day, a real buzz in the room, and we are so pleased to host a space for Business English practitioners to come together and share their best practice.''

Happy Mother's Day! Today is Mothering Sunday in the UK, also known as Mother's Day. The date of this celebration may differ a lot amongst countries, however, in the UK it is held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, three weeks before Easter. Traditionally, it is a Christian holiday. On this day people would go to visit their ‘mother’ church and honour Mother Mary. This gave people the opportunity to meet with their families too, as everyone was given a free day on this occasion. Nowadays, this holiday is a day where all mothers are celebrated. People now usually refer to it as Mother's Day and it is seen as a secular holiday (celebrated by people of all religions). Children might cook breakfast for their mother and will often give them a card and gifts to thank them for being their wonderful mum.

The English UK Regional Fair, Middle East 2017

The English UK Fairs are the only agent workshops exclusively focused on the UK's English language teaching sector. Our 2017 agent workshop for the Middle East region was held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 6 to 8 March. English UK member centre representatives joined agents from Oman, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Georgia, Turkey, Morocco, Azerbaijan and United Arab Emirates. At our fairs, and our other overseas events, we bring together accredited UK English language centres and professional study abroad agents to promote the variety, scope and quality of the UK English language teaching sector. The events centre around building business relationships. The days were filled with group discussions, seminars and one-to-one meetings, and the evenings with activities designed to give additional networking time, providing the representatives with lots of opportunities to really get to know each other. On the welcome evening, guests enjoyed a British Council sponsored networking reception and dinner on the gorgeous beachfront destination of Bayshore. The second evening guided us onto a dhow boat where the breath-taking sight of the Emirates Palace and the Heritage Village fascinated the guests. Delegates spent time bonding over learning traditional weaving before a dinner of traditional and international dishes on the main deck.
