Janessa Griffith from Ontaria, Canada visited the RAF Museum just to see her grandmother's image in our War Brides exhibition. Her grandmother Kathleen is from Yorkshire and married a young Canadian airman who was flying Lancasters during WW2. After they married, she, like 44,000 other war brides and their 21,000 children emigrated to Canada in the wake of a war in which romance flourished between locals and soldiers stationed overseas. The romance did not always endure and many war brides struggled to adjust to a new life in a far away country. According to Janessa, her 'nana' was fortunate she moved to a large town, rather than live in the isolating countryside, a fate which befell many war brides. Kathleen, now 95 years young, is still living in Canada. The War Brides exhibition is still on display in our Art Gallery and entrance is free. Applications are open now for the RAF Museum’s: • PhD Bursary (£1,500) • Masters Prize (£250) • Undergraduate Prize (£150) Applications close on 25 October 2019. Vulcan navigators try the Dambusters Virtual Reality Experience

Two Vulcan navigators came to try our exciting Dambusters Virtual Reality Experience! We asked them what it was like to fly the Avro Vulcan jet at low altitude and especially, how do they compare it to the famous 1943 Lancaster raid? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUPyprOXmiY

Tomorrow we will be holding the Spitfire 10k and the 1k Spitfire Family Run at our London site. If you are not participating in either of these events and intend visiting us by car, please plan to arrive after 12.00pm. We anticipate substantial demand for parking at our site by people taking part in both of these runs and we cannot guarantee car-parking for other visitors until later in the day. Alternatively, we would suggest that people travel to us by public transport. The 303 bus will drop you off at our gates from either Colindale or Mill Hill Broadway Station. A recent enquiry was sent to our Research Department by David Kiefer, a former volunteer with the Museum's Aircraft Access Team. While he was in Brisbane, he found out that his boss’s father was a Hawker Typhoon pilot in WW2, called Pilot Officer J McLaughlin. David scanned the pilot's logbook and send it to Andrew Dennis, curator in the RAF Museum London Archives. One amazing page shows that he was shot down on a raid and his logbook was annotated with “missing from operation”. However, McLaughlin managed to evade capture and with the help of the Dutch resistance, escaped through Belgium and France into neutral Spain, from where he got back to the UK. He then got his logbook back and rubbed out those words and wrote in a summary of what happened.

Conversation Café Volunteers (with ESOL Learners)

Would you like to make a difference in your community? Or even just looking for a chance to meet new people? Then you should consider joining the conversation café. The conversation café gives non-English speakers a chance to practice their language skills in a relaxed and supportive environment. This makes a big difference to participants social skills, mental health and confidence within the community. As a volunteer, you will be aided by Barnett and Southgate College to communicate meaningful conversations with participants in order to improve their English skills and help make friends along the way. If you would like to help us in our mission, sessions start Wednesdays from the 25th September. Click the link to find out more information and apply today. https://bit.ly/2I6W1MC
