There are now just a few tickets remaining for a place on our Mayor's fabulous fund-raising cruise, which is due to sail on Sunday, September 11, from Riley Green Marina. South Ribble's first citizen Cllr Linda Woollard will be joined by her guests on this two and a half hour journey through some lovely countryside on a traditional narrowboat. Included in the price of £23.50 are a range of tasty tapas, to add a sunny Mediterranean theme to the cruise, and a glass of wine. If you’d like to come along, please contact Tracy on 01772 625301 to book your place. The narrowboat will leave promptly at 4.30pm from the marina, next to the Boatyard pub. All profits will go to the Mayor's charities, St Catherine's Hospice, Galloway's and Heartbeat.

The Red Ensign, the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag, will be raised at the Civic Centre on West Paddock this evening and will fly during the weekend to mark Merchant Navy Day. The annual event, which falls on September 3, was introduced in 2000 to honour the brave men and women who kept our island nation afloat during both World Wars. The day also celebrates our dependence on modern-day merchant seafarers who are responsible for 95 per cent of the UK’s import, including much of the food we eat.

If you’ve been in Worden Park recently and noticed that a couple of trees have changed shape – don’t worry, it’s all for a good cause. The two trees affected are both sweet chestnuts that are decaying as they reach the end of their life. But rather than remove them completely our neighbourhood services team has transformed them into a home for birds and beasts. By removing the tops and retaining the lower sections of the trees as ‘nature sticks’ they have managed to provide a great habitat for many species of insects and other invertebrates and a food source for wildlife. The trees will also attract birds and bats, providing ideal roosting and nesting sites.

Were you among the crowds at the Gregson Green Gala Day? If so we know you had a fabulous day packed with fun acitivities - and the rain stayed away! Best of all, the day raised an impressive amount towards the planned new community centre - almost £8,000! Our estimates reckon that between 700 and 800 people attended the event on Gregson Lane playing fields to take part in family activities ranging from the coconut shy and tombola to crazy golf and face painting. A grreat time was had by all.
